Warlords: Crash to dt when turning on grid

Been noticing a bug when I turn on the gridlines in the later game. The game crashes to desktop and I get a bug report message. This only seems to have happened later in a game when most of the world has been discovered - so I guess it could be just too much hassle on my system. It has never repeated itself when the game is new - as far as I can remember.

I'm running -
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
1G RAM
Radeon 9800 XXL 128Mb

Has happened in more than one game with different civs.

Also noticed a minor graphical problem when it seems that catapults/trebs are attacking an enemy. The game doesn't show the attacking cat/treb and the enemy forces fire/attack in random directions. I was attacking a barbarian city when I noticed it.

Haven't tried to reproduce this one but can vaguely remember it happening in the past.

I am also having this problem, it is very annoying. I just bought the damn thing so I do not know if this just happens in the late game.

---------NOT COOL

I'll add a 'me too' to this. Late game; end of a nightly session; doesn't happen so much at the beginning of a session.

Same problem here. I bought the game two days ago, and yesterday the game started crashing consistently after loading a saved game.

I tried a suggestion I found in another thread this evening that seemed to work. Hold down the shift key when starting the game from the desktop (I held it down until the 2k animation began to play). This apparently clears some graphics cache. I am not sure whether it was just a coincidence, but I was able to turn on the gridlines without problem after trying this.

I can turn the Grid on at the start of games no problem. The problem comes late in a game when the map is all, or mostly, cleared. I assume the problem lies somewhere in teh amount of processing power required to grid the map. I'm no expert but I would expect that is a lot of gridlines (on a huge map). I might be very wrong.

I run clearly above the recommended specs for warlords.

Please send me a private message if you are getting the grid crash consistently and you are willing to test the patch.

Has happened to me too. Late game, map almost fully cleared. I get a CTD when I turn the grid on after loading a save.

If I restart the game, reload the same save and turn grid on again the game won't crash a second time.

Had the grid crash happen to me as well, good thing there's auto saves...

I have the same thing happening. The grid works fine in the early game, but if you turn it on during the late game, it crashes.

dido. I get a "Windows has to close" error and I alway chose to send a report to microsoft.

I'll try the shift trick. Does anyone know how to track the problem once I submit it to Microsoft? I'm not geeky enough to understand the text file that gets sent in and was hoping that they could at least give me a vauge idea or what it causing the game to crash. I does seem to be some kind of memory error but I would like to know if there are some settings like virtual memory that can be adjusted.

Just wondering.. does those that has problem with crash to desktop with map grid have the 'high detail terrain' option turned on?
There are some possible indications that this crash may only happen if this option is turned on

Definitely in my case. Turning "High Detail Terrain" off resolves the problem.

I'd still like to play with it on. :mischief:

Well none of the fixes above worked for me, but what I just did was load
a small game, turn on grid lines, then load the big game. I was then able
to turn on grid lines without crashing but not sure if I got lucky. Would
really appreciate a patch for this. I have been leaving the game running
iconified to avoid this, but it eventually blue screens when I restore it.
The original C4 had a memory leak which the latest updates cleared up
a little. The warlords patch stopped the leaks, but its now a bit unstable.
