I tend to play a peaceful game. I claim as much land as I can and then consolidate my borders. I have an army, but not a large one, I keep to myself. But if the AI starts a war with me, I finish it, and by finish it, I mean finish them. My current game, I'm on a continent with Cyrus and Ghandi. The both surprise DOW on me on the same turn, I take out Ghandi, then Cyrus. This is all before anyone in the game discovers caravels. I'm the first and I go meet the civs on the other main continent. After a few years of polite relations, they all denounce me stating I'm a warmonger. How do they know? The other two empires were wiped out before the other continent knew they existed. It's not going to keep me from winning but I'm just curious.

The trick is to send them delegations and gifts in the first few turns you meet them and have a DoF. Then they won't start hating you. But you'll have to remember to keep renewing your friendship otherwise when you revert to neutral relations that's when your warmonger status will make them hate you and you won't be able to declare a DoF then

They will also know from your negative diplo favour that you own two rival capital cities (-5 diplo favour per capital city - at least on deity, i don't know if that holds for other difficulties). They will assume you've conquered others and will likely want to conquer them.

I wasn't around for the Roman Empire, or the Mongol Empire, or whatever else.. but I can still tell you they are warmongers. Word travels.

Yeah after playing Civ 5 recently I realize that game doesn't do this (as long as you finish the conquest before the other continent discovers you). It's probably why they changed it for 6. It's kind of annoying, but I've come to accept it. The worst part is when Alexander or Genghis gets on you for your warmongering penalty.

I find that if I do some conquering in the middle game after I make alliances, I can still keep those alliances. So I do like that.
