Wars with PTW add-on?

I had gotten CIV3 a while ago, but gave up playing it.

Mainly I got tired of very tedious wars and moving many units to and from combat. Also, I found that it was impossible to play without getting caught up into wars.

So, I wanted to ask is this aspect of the game any better in single player with the PTW add-on? (The feature list says that there are commands to handle stacked units.)

Thanks.

I think the AI's aggressiveness has not changed, in that there are still frequent wars (even between the AI civs, not involving you). But yes, the move-stack and move-same-units-stack commands are quite useful, and cut down somewhat on some of your complaints.

It is not nessesary to have war in CIV III. I won Emperor level game by Space Race win without one war. BTW, I didn't have Golden Age too. I should tell you it was most interesting game I ever played!

Civ3 had those from 1.21 upwards as well, stack movement. With PTW, there's a mixed stack movement. I believe you can have a auto-goto for freshly build units.

That's true......you can set a rally point for newly produced units.
Each city can have it's own separate rally point if you so desire.

True. I've even got domination once without a single shot being fired. (archipelago map - England).

I like how PTW is as far as combat is concerned, its quite easier with stacking.

With the PTW stacking, do you still need to move each unit to attack or can you attack by simply moving the entire stack?

Also, what about healing damaged units? You still need to move them individually back to one of your cities correct?

I never used armies in CIV3. Would that help me? Don't I need a great leader to form an army and there are few of those? Also, your army units cannot be upgraded which seems to be a big waste.

I am trying to find out if I should purchase the PTW add-on. Sadly, I liked everything about CIV3, but wars. I just don't have the patience to manage 100 combat units and fight one move at a time. Also, I have quite a few war game simulations which depicts realistic combat. As such, I don't want to spend 90% of my CIV3 playing time move units for combat.

Thanks for your thoughts.

You still need to attack with each unit. The exception is auto-bombard. Now you can assign artillery to continually bombard a square each round until there are no more targets. (it seems to only work with artillery/bombers, not catapults or cannon, which are next to useless anyway).

Correct. If all your tanks are damaged but your MI is OK, you can use the 'move stack units of same type' button and move all your tanks to a city.

Highly debatable. If you are playing a conquest/domination game, and army of cavalry may be very useful to you, but if you're going for space race, you're better off using Great Leaders for rushing wonders/improvements. And yes, once a unit is in an army, it's stuck as that, so you may have an army of knights running around in the modern age. You can disband any army for 100 shields, though.

It can be difficult to avoid wars, but not impossible (many people have strategies, eg give in to demands/make frequent trades). I always have war declared on me, even when I try to avoid them, for one reason or another. You can also fight a defensive war, just build defensive units that you don't have to move, and a few offensive ones to pick off survivors. Then sue for peace when their economy is lacking. Unfortunately, the grind of warfare in the modern era is something that can not be fixed with an add-on (they have done what they can to simplify moves, as noted above). It's more a matter of luck and playstyle.

I think the wars have gotten a tad larger once you get into modern age also. With some of the new improvements, you get more cash and therefore can support a bit larger of an army.
