Well, the initial justification was WMDs which wasn't discovered to be a significant threat to western nations.

I could buy the justification of tyrant freeing if we didn't botch up the job so terribly.

going to agree with perf right here

Ehh, even if Iraq had WMD's, I wouldn't have invaded. Iraq was a good counter balance to Iran. Now, the whole balance of power in the Mid East is screwed up. It is a major power vacuum.

Also, while I am happy Saddam is gone, in retrospect, more people have died directly from the war then throughout the rein of Saddam. Iraq is worse off now then it was before we invaded. The infrastructure is shot, previous sectarian hatred that was previously kept in check is now in the streets of Iraq with an AK in hand. To top it all off, we unwittingly handed Iran influence in Iraq.

Through all of this mess, it is hard to find any justification whatsoever. If it were handled differently and for different reasons, then it might be different.

The invasion of Iraq was an unprovoked act of aggression, justified by neither traditional nor modern standards of international law.

No.

There weren't WMD's and all the tyrant freeing bullshat isn't our business anyway.

Now we're paying for it with bodies and beaucoup bucks. What a fantastic adventure this has been...

Justified? Yes. Right thing to do? Yes.

Was it done the right way? I can't really say; I'm not a military strategist.

Yes, but could it have been prevented while still achieving the same results? Is there another way to ensure that our long-term geopolitical goals are fulfilled?

What results are you refering to?
Is there another way to ensure that our long-term geopolitical goals are fulfilled?
Well, I don't think invading Iraq was in our best interest, mismanagement or not.

LMAO

"There is some much distain in the (armed) services right now for the OSD (Rumsfield) that it has been reduce to, F___ you, whatever you want we dont, if the OSD order the navy to build another carrier, the Navy would say it wanted sail power"

FIASCO - Thomas Ricks

Preemptive wars are rarely justified.

1) Iraq is not worse off. It is much better off. There is hope now where there was none. Besides, the death rates are pretty much the same as under saddam. The infrastructure is not horribly worse. Some evaulations find that those living in places that were not favored by saddam are doing considerably better.

2) Enough with Fiasco. A top official making a negative assesment of internal relations is not exactly new and breaking news. People biz about each other all the time. So the military was pissed at good ole Rummy, so what? I'm sure the military budget was appropriated at various levels. I don't think Rummy was making on the ground decisions about what gear to carry into combat, or how to deploy the weaponry. Exactly HOW important is Rummy to the day-to-day operations of the US military?

3) Justified.

To sell a pre-emptive political war of choice there needs to be an incredibly high bar for leaders to jump. With its obfuscation, its shifting rhetoric, its twisting of history, its ignorance of what was actually going to happen, the Bush administration never came close to that level of trustworthiness. Invading Zimbabwe to oust Mugabe I could maybe buy, but this Iraq garbage was never going to fly because the balance of pros and cons was so far on the cons side.

Between the incompetence of the administration and the ludicrous nature of the objectives, any idiot who wasn't wilfully decieving themselves or covering their ears and shouting "9/11" over and over again could see what an absolute debacle this was going to be.
