Washington Monarch Cookbook Mark II (IC Concurrent)

@DNK

1. Your tech order is reasonable. The important part is that you chose the right first three techs in the right order. The order of the next few is not too important although Pots should, of course, come before Writing. Your research is hurting from your mistake about not claiming the gold and horses. At this moment I'd fix that, start training some chariots for defense and switch to Sailing for trade routes. IW can wait a bit, especially since you haven't expanded off your peninsula. Consequently you don't need it for either chopping or defense.

2. Slavery is a great civic for this leader. Whip out a monument and a granary in every new town. Yes, I know it's one pop each but George has the happies to manage that with ease and get the buildings up fast.

(note that 3 and 4 are reversed)

4. Yes, you're right. Boston should have been 1SE. Every city should have a source of food and this one takes the Rice. The horse city then gets placed on the incense and gets two FPs and an oasis. Neither city will amount to much before biology but they are both better than this one, which has no future at all. Growth will be long painful here. To get any at all, you have to take a citizen off your best tile (this gold) for many many turns.

3. You've misplaced two cities, DC and Boston, so it's difficult finding room for more. There is one in the north to claim the crab for sure and there's also one in the centre. The incense city is still a viable location despite Boston and the desert hill is an alternate spot. I think I would choose the hill but it's close.

5. Builds are good although slavery would help a lot for getting those monuments and granaries up.

DNK - Feel free to join up for the 2nd round

My save after another 100 turns, will post more detailed thoughts about it later.

Spoiler :
At war with montezuma but nothing much come of it, he attacked at the start and was easily defeated. I am generally equal/ahead in tech mainly due to trading going fairly well (went straight for alphabet near the start of this round which worked quite nicely).

Coming towards the end of a golden age (got a great artist from music) and have reasonable relations with the other civs, though the the inca are now vassals of france (not sure how it happened, didn't see them go to war but HC suddenly only had 1 city and was vassal of louis).

Would be interested in people's thoughts, got 7 cities in and made the occasioanl sillly mistake here and there (could probably go to a previous save and correct a few things to make it more efficient). I have been using whipping throughout the time, though never further than -2 anger and the cities I've used it most have plenty of food and recover quickly.

One problem I've been having is what to do with my cities, so far just been generally improving them all without much specialisation (apart from the great scientist building in my capital). Also not sure whether to start building forges in most cities-I normally play with an industrious leader and build them a lot but not so sure now.

Here is my Round 2 submission. The increased difficulty and tough start is making it rough going for me, but I'm learning :D

Spoiler :

My goal in tech research to start off this round was finish sailing, take IW to see where iron was located. After that was done, then Alphabet to Civil Service then beeline to Lib. The AIs are feeding me alot of religions so Free Religion could be good later on for the tech boost.

I saw the iron revealed in the far north of our land before I sent out my newly crafted settlers. It gave me a rather difficult choice as to where to settle a new northern city. Either I settle on the east coast to for seafood and produce culture a.s.a.p. for two border pops, or lose the fish and settle 1 northwest to get iron after just one border pop. I chose the former, but with what happened very late in my round I really wish I chose the iron instead :(

Another goal was to keep up exploration of the world that Bibor had already laid the ground work for. I think I didn't do too bad, lost a WB to barb galleys.

Some other key moments:

You can't see it, but my WB ran into a second barb ship coming from the south.

my 2nd round

Spoiler :

Short situation description @400AD:

Have 10 cities up, not participated in any wars yet.
As far as i know they was only one short war anyway, between Gilga and Bismarck, which ended when Gilga razed one of Bismarck's cities.
Tech situation is very good, am way ahead of my neighbors in that regard. But practically all AIs managed to grab a lot of land. That's why i am thinking it might be best to focus on production of maces & Trebuchets next.

detailed Report 1500BC - 1AD:

Spoiler :

1500 change production in capital to Settler, buldings can wait for now. Goal is to claim the SE Luxuries. 2nd city is changed to Archer. Also, we sign open borders with monty.

1450 Trade with Giggles: Fish for Corn, even tough we have Corn ourself. I'm hoping for the "supplied us with resources" diplo-bonus

1125 Iron Working discovered.

i thought at first that 1S of iron wouldn't work because it's 2 squares away from the dotmapped western city. Somehow i didn't think that that western city could be moved 1S too..
Well, at least it gave a well defendable iron.. Who knows what Monty is cooking up.

1st shot at my second round ended up with getting my butt handed to me by vultures midway through :( did a little too much expanding and building...

I can easily make the next game at Normal Speed but that would make comparisons with the Immortal Cookbook more complicated.

However maybe the players should hold a poll to decide what speed they prefer in terms of speed...

Kos - Although I prefer Epic speed myself and think it's the best, I'm more than open for normal speed cookbooks. We could alternate speeds. I don't think Gumbolt is opposed to it either. Just run it by him and that should be enough. I don't think a vote is needed.

Hey Folks - This round is winding down and it the submissions have been slow to come. I'll give it all do tomorrow but try to get your rounds completed.

Went OK:

Spoiler :
Got down 8 cities although theyre not great, I didnt go for the rice/sugar site because of culture and diplo concerns as I would be the most likelytarget for giggles since he founded confu and was in it with bismarck. Everyone else is buddhist so I am nothing. Monty sat still for the whole round and only made a couple of demands although he is currently in weehorn (or whatever) mode. No wars just quite a bit of hate for Bismark. Tech (see screen below) is decent monopoly on Philo so founded Tao, monopoly on paper and have all be Monty and Biz's world maps, cant trade with Biz for fear of worst enemy diplo with Pacal and Monty I think. BPT is a completely different issue, in all of the games I've played recently its been low (I think) and this game is no different, not a lot of good cottage room and lacklustre effort to run specialists on my part. In caste to run more scientists in Washington to part bulb lib for FR and obv free tech. Not sure what I would go for from Liberalism.

Comments, don't know if this needs spoilers did just in case (but doubt it)

Spoiler :
@ Shrielkul Nice gem pop! Its a shame about Monty but hes bound to be doing that in every game what size stack is it? Tech could be better, the tech screen would be nice. I would open the save but that take slike 10 mins for my PC so I chose to open Bufo's for no reason

@ Bufo I had the same problems with specialisation and I don't know about everyone else but I normally build quite a few forges when in slavery. Strange that Louis decided to take out HC as far as I know it hasn't happened in other games and I haven't known him to be very agressive only pathetic combined with the fact that in mine he settled plenty of cities peacefully. I like that this has slowed down HC (hate him) but presumably this makes Louis a threat. I like your large cities and I wonder whether your 1 Chicago is better than the alternative of 2 using all available resources. Nice BPT how much is that due to the GA? A couple of bad things exploration could have been more, and Monty again

@ Mintegar Nice tech and great that you have lots of cities. What has this done to relations with Giggles and why did Giggles and Biz go to war? This is lucky deflecting his aggressive interests away from you. Shameful exploration on the back of Bibor's great start with that :p

On my own save after looking at other I should have started my GP earlier so I could stay in Slavery and work more cottages

I can easily make the next game at Normal Speed but that would make comparisons with the Immortal Cookbook more complicated.

A normal speed game won't kill us. We might have to adjust the turn lengths?

My 2nd round :)

Spoiler :

An interesting 2nd round ! Made me happy, all went pretty well - rarely played a so peaceful game.

On the development side of things, I started by massive whipping / chopping to rectify the heavy lack of workers. All the tiles are now more or less improved.
I also added 4 cities, more or less at the planned places except one that I moved to capture the iron more quickly and a new one (the 1st I created) to capture more sugar and become the leader in importation of sugar in the world !

On the religion side of things, I adopted confucianism to be best mate with Gilma.

In science, I have made some very good deals, and acquired freely lots of useful techs like calendar, construction, mathematics, civil services, horesriding, aestetics, thelology and the smallest ones monotheism etc... I messed up with a wrong click and ended up bulbing Paper with the GS I received which now puts me lead of the race to liberalism which is not too bad either. I am just missing metal casting and compass I think in this tier but it is not a big deal at this stage.

In Diplomacy I have good relations with most of the leaders and very good with our neighbour Gilma.

In military, I went to hereditary rule very early and started building some troops as I capture ressources, hence a mainly chariots, but a few horse archers and a swordsman while I have even started on catapults. Around 12 units in total - More a defensive group at the moment but I have just adopted the religion civis which will give more experience to any new troop as the next step is war and conquest while whipping 6 unis and building the Oxford one.

I think the next step is to build more troops and start conquering cities while winning liberalism. Rest to know who to attack first - I have no view on montezuma's continent so far and I have good relation with gilma so I hesitate. Maybe I should push gilma to attack bismark with me to conquer another third of the continent.

Pretty happy about my game, think our fearless leader is in a good position to conquer the world...

Not started the voting yet Lymond???

I'm going to give this until first thing tomorrow to see if we get more submissions. Some 1st round players have not posted. This will give some more time for our overseas friends.

Round 2 Voting is Now Open

The voting will last for 2 days and will close at approximately Midnight EST on Tuesday. Please post a request for additional time needed to vote, but I would like to close by early Wednesday at the latest to get the next round going. (The voting round could end sooner if everyone gets their votes in earlier)

Standard cookbook doctrine: Its not always about voting for the best save but the save that will be most interesting or challenging to play. Anyone that submitted a save is free to vote.

Please rank your top 3 in order.

First place 3 points.
Second place 2 points
Third place. 1 point.

PLEASE NOTE!! To keep voting fair you cant vote for your own save. You are expected to vote for 3 saves and give reasons for your voting. Remember this is a learning game. I would encourage everyone to act within the spirit that the cookbook is intended.

most players went for the education-path tech wise. That may be better. Hrun allready has education completed, nice work! Did you use some bulbing to get there quicker?

I just figured i'd like to try medieval warfare on monarch for some reason. It would be good if another capital could be captured rather sooner than later. Not sure how well it would work out tough.

Nice tech and great that you have lots of cities. What has this done to relations with Giggles and why did Giggles and Biz go to war?

Luckily Gilgamesh's nearest city was not too close to our south-eastern, so it actually took quite some time for the culture to overlap. I think Bismarck got hit by the "close border tension" penalty sooner. But maybe it was just luck or hidden modifier which caused Giggles to pick Bismarck as target.

Shameful exploration on the back of Bibor's great start

I figured there wasn't really any pressing need to do further exploration. All the civs on the map where allready discovered (that info is shown on F8 screen), and trade established. I disbanded the workboat which sailed around germany once it came back to known territory, because our treasury was paying for unit-maintenance at the time.
The borders of our continent are known. We know that Giggles is in the middle of it, between us and Bismarck. Really what more info do we need?
One thing i didn't consider while playing is that more exploration gives your maps more trade value. But i wonder if this is really the case in this game, as the AI is likely to have had the coast explored themself allready.

Going for circumnavigation bonus could of course be another reason to go for early exploration-frenzy. But i think +1 movement for ships does not matter that much. If we can conquer our continent, and the french/inca/maya one, fast ships are not needed for victory. And this was allready possible to tell by the exploration done by 1500BC.

I probably should have done more exploration, but a barbarian galley caught my work boat down south and never really got round to sending out any troops to look around gilgamesh, as was worried about an amphibious attack from monty.

Monty is currrently ready for peace (just not for decent terms yet) and have started building a couple triremes to destroy his fleet and blockade his ports if the war continues.
