What does that mean exactly? I would like Kublai Khan to DoW on Sitting Bull, but he is not willing to do that. He would declare on Hammurabi, though. Kublai and Bull used to be bitter enemies, but after they both converted to Taoism they have now been more neutral to each other.

Is there anything that I can do to make Kublai declare war on Bull? Just getting friendly with K. just wouldn´t be enough in this case - or would it?

I find that statement to be bizare myself sometimes. Like your asking the civ on the other side of the civ you want to invade, and the two don't even get along. "We would have nothing to gain."

"Uh...what about all that land and resources?"

Have you tried getting Sitting Bull to declare on Khan? Not only does friendliness a factor but power also. An AI is more likely to declare on a weaker opponent or one that someone is already at war with.

I have, but he doesn´t like me enough (they´re both pleased with me at this point). But maybe I should try to get friendly with Sitting Bull and ask again. Still, that might not help me anyways. Both Kublai and Sitting Bull are leading military powers in the game, and Kublai is number 1. I am number 6, and there´s nothing much I can do about it because I don´t even have iron. So being pleased with Kublai an Sitting Bull and friendly with Hammurabi really doesn´t give me enough security guarantees in itself, does it?

Usually I find that it means that they do not share a border, so the new territory would be too isolated from the rest of their territory and so too hard or costly to work.

Usually I see 'we would have nothing to gain' when the side you are talking to has a much weaker military power than the target nation.
