Embarrasing question. What exactly is a level 6 unit? Is it a unit with 6 experience points?

Does that unit have to be sitting in the city you want to build West Point?

Transform my ignorance into knowledge oh wise sages of the forumn!

It's a unit that has received 6 promotions. It does not have to be in the city where you build West Point.

6 promotions - it would take a unit that was

city raider i
city raider ii
city raider iii
combat i
combat ii
combat iii

or any other combination of 6 promotions?

Baracks can get you 1, a GG adds promotions and vassalage and theo. help. Looks like a unit needs to go off to war to finish it up.

Thanks.

Actually a level 6 unit would have only 5 promotions (unless you're aggressive and/or protective and/or have a building that gives free promotion and/or said unit start with some promotions by default). A unit level is shown in unit info - bottom-left corner of the screen.

Level 6 is 26XP for a non-charismatic leader.

0XP - Level 1
2XP - Level 2
5XP - Level 3
10XP - Level 4 (Heroic Epic)
17XP - Level 5
26XP - Level 6

So it's "5 promotions" but that's not completely accurate since free promos(aggressive leaders and so on) does not count.

The # of promo question has been answered. The easiest way to get there consistently is by attaching a GG...usually even a medic will do (you might want to let a medic I guy fight 1 extra battle before attaching if not CHA, so you never have to risk the GG).

My lvl6 is usually a Scout. All it takes is a few encounters with animals then polishing off a Barb warrior or two while fortified on a hill (Sometimes they get experience from a hut pop) and the Scout has enough promotions for a GG to put him at lvl6. I go for Medic promotions and then send him along with an offensive stack because, short of annihilation, Scouts are unlikely to take damage.

Scouts are barred from taking Woodsman III. You could always have another unit with Woodsman III join your stack, but it's frequently easier to have a single super-medic. Anyways, a normal (non-Warlord) unit with Woodsman III and Medic I is probably preferable to a Medic III unit.

Except that to jump to level 6 with a GG, you need to start with a level 4 unit. Otherwise you'll have to engage in some combat with it and run the risk of losing it before it advances that far.

If I have destroyers then i usually send them off to wipe out someones wooden navy. Once you get them to level 5 with blitz it usually don't take long to make that last level up.

Privateers can also be a good way to get that level 6 unit. You don't even have to be at war.

took the words right out of my mouth. They prey on AI, not barbs, so no XP cap. No Declaration of war needed. Unless you're in a hurry to get the xp needed there's no need for a great general, just leisurely pick off galleys and trireams of backwards civs. They also pay a portion of their maintainance via pillaging AI fishing boats, which they have to pay :hammers: to replace. They get sentry as a free promotion Plus, They upgrade to destroyers, so you can have several combat 4-blitz-sentry destroyers later. Or, i find, combat 2-flanking 1-navigation 2-sentry privateers are actually more likely to survive the enemies discovering frigates. mmmmm.... piracy...

-edit- Don't forget that you can send privateers stacked with a frigate escort and just hit and run into enemy territory and AI won't know what to do about it!
