What do we know about opposite starting bias ?

I take the example of Catherine who has tundra bias as leader of khmers with tropical and flood plain bias.

- Do we then have a 50% chance to start on tundra and a 50% chance of being in a tropical zone?
- Is the starting bias of the leader a priority?
- Is the starting bias of the civilization a priority?
- Does the game crash, or do I end up with tropical tiles generated right next to tundra tiles?

You have 4 hours

One of those Civ 6 map script layer cakes with a desert/tropical zone, then plains, then tundra?

But probably one of those first three you listed. Some leader-civ combos are going to risk having anti-synergistic starts and it'll just be something to deal with. Or challenge yourself with.

This is an interesting point! Perhaps a warning will flash in the UI pointing out a geographical incompatibility between leader and civ?

It’s beyond me to guess which, if either, would take priority according to the code.

I would probably guess leader priority….since that will be all game long.

I would logically think the opposite: civilization priority is best.

On the one hand, without the starting bias of the beginning civilization, you start directly with a penalty, and you cannot take advantage of the civilization which with you play now. On the other hand, you can very well colonize later zones more adapted to your leader and to the civilizations that you will embody in the future, and why not move your capital there in the next age.

That does make more sense.

I'm sure this came up in one of the livestreams but I can't recall the answer. I think maybe 50/50? Iirc, stacking leader & civ with same starting bias would increase your chances further.

except it is not chances. they “build” your starting spot, so you’re guaranteed to get some of the starting bias…unless the combination of civ and leader biases doesn’t work (tundra tropics….where they are not just different, but cant be near each other in the map engine)

So maybe it's just that having both a leader and civ with same bias will guarantee it, otherwise there is an element of chance. Not sure, just have a vague recollection that they did talk about it.

I would imagine more of “more” of that terrain. ie
rough-flat gives mix
rough-grassland would have some rough some not+some grassland some not
rough-rough would have almost no flat tiles
