Are all of them made of rock or iron?

I was wondering if there are asteroids that are made of pure gold, uranium, titanium or even silver

That would be interesting to know because by the end of this century there might be a new profession : space miners
After, we run out of resources we are going to have turn to the space to find them and then bring them back to Earth in huge spaceships.
    Ideas on that.
We could all start a company and be rich by 2050 or 60, after we develop all the needed technology. LOL

You could get your ores off the moon. The moon's surface is likely coated in pulverized asteroid. Or... hey, here's a good source of asteroid material - The EARTH. Do you realize how much asteroidal material has hit the Earth over the last 3 billion years?! It's like a giant asteroid vacuum...

It's a good thing you wrote LOL, because that's what comes my mind of this idea.

    Totally useless idea.

AC = Alpha Centauri / SMAC = Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, PC-Game by makers of Civilization III.

Several categories of asteroids... now I'm a palentologist, and it's been a while that I had to learn that stuff, but IIRC:

Metal Asteroids (only a few %): consist mostly of iron and nickel

Stone Asteroids: consist of the mineral found in the earths crust - NOT commercially usefull!!!!!

Mixed Asteroids: consist of a mixture of iron, nickel and 'stone' - AFAIK not commercially useable even in large quantities.

So, I have to disappoint you: no pure-gold asteroids :(

hmm, I thought someone once said that most of the asteroids consist of ice. So most of them are just big balls of dust/rock fragments and other stuff/junk, held together by the low temperature in space and that just a small part are "real" rocks.
But maybe I'm mistaken (like most of the time I try to remember something...)

Actually, IIRC, They some of them have large quantities ice.

I wouldn't have posted this, because I have similar feeling like you have; I might just remember wrong.

I'm fairly sure that its comets that have a large amount of ice.

Comets are frequently described as "dirty snowballs".

As Killer said, a few asteroids are metal: iron/nickel, but most are just ordinary rocks.

Asteroid mining would involve checking asteroid after asteroid, searching for the few non-"stoney" ones. Probably not worth the investment until we are actually living in space, when it might be cheaper to to do this than have to boost our metals out of the gravity wells of the planets.

We already found a planet that is made purely out of diamonds a few years ago.
But it is too far to be reachable. :(

The asteroid belt isn't going anywhere so it would probably be easier to track, locate and exploit resources there than some asteroid randomly flying around....assuming they have any materials worth mining for in the first place

Wait, isn't it relatively easy to produce diamond's synthetically (sp?),
and the only reason they're expensive is that there's a massive corporative trust behind them?

(Please notice the word 'relatively'. Thanks.)

Actually you just hopped onto the asteroids-consist-of-ice train after it departed the "EezT's Brain" train station :p
