What are your "Forgotten" techs?

Re: Forgotten techs:
When not going tradition: Sailing and fishing. I heavily deprioritize anything naval related until navigation, all my exploring is done with an embarking recon unit, the great lighthouse is way too competitive for me to go for, and I rarely have to cross water to settle cities until I have researched fishing for other reasons.

Also, astronomy. Chichen Itza is gone by the time Im halfway through its prerequisite
The tech for me comes earlier than the policy for observatories if im picking rationalism
But crossing oceans! Well... if you want to explore, you already have compass, why are you sending anything but caravels and explorers?
Maybe you want to settle that really nice island in the middle of the ocean? ok, but you have to research banking too so your new city isnt stuck making classical buildings for the next 50 turns. Rushing both banking and astronomy for the sake of one city is not really practical or worthwhile imo
Apart from that you get some yields to scientists (nice, but unnoticed most of the time) and some UIs

The biggest one I can think of is Architecture.

1 national wonder, 2 world wonders, and a specialist boost is all it has. If I'm not in an easy tech lead then I won't even risk going for it. Porcelain Tower is a nice wonder if you can get it, but Taj Mahal is not a priority wonder for anyone in any game. And if you miss those wonders then this tech is worthless.
The Hermitage isn't even buildable until you research Acoustics, a different T2 Renaissance tech, because it requires an Opera House. Very badly placed.

Architecture is also on the top, so it only is a prerequisite for 1 Industrial tech -- Scientific Theory -- and that tech isn't too great either. Public schools are way too expensive relative to their paltry :c5science:, but Zoos are okay at least. I often find I'm in Modern Era by the time I finally hold my nose and grab architecture; the sheer repulsiveness of this 1 tech results in me falling behind on the archaeology race.
The only reason I get Scientific Theory early is for rushing Archaeology

Astronomy is for Missionaries and diplo units.

Well and zoos now. Zoos give a major boost to science when they come out, can basically grab you a full tech with all the bonus science

Do Zoos give enough science to pay for themselves? That's a pricey tech and a big opportunity cost to move cities to zoos. Unless scientific theory leads to your goal (like archeology) I think skipping it will reach the goal faster.

So in my current game, the tech costs 4,666 science. You would need 10 zoos to fully pay for the tech. And of course gain all the culture benefits from teh zoo itself.

Fertilizer is almost always the last tech I take unless I have to. In the industrial era, I find every other tech to be more valuable, whereas Fertilizer gives yields and an expensive building that uses horses. It's not that the yields are bad, it's just that everything above and below it have a much more clear direction. Eventually I get it because I want Industrialization, but it's my biggest afterthought

Yea and I think Taj is better than you give it credit for. You can often get both because the AI usually doesn't research the tech.
I feel like I'd almost always go Porcelain Tower first given the choice.

Absolutely, but sometimes you can get just for both wonders. Put the Taj in your 2nd best production city (especially if its closer to where the religious action is). I will give me best effort to the PT, but if I get the Taj great, and if I get both, awesome!
