What countries do you like best?

Australia to live, Spain to visit, Mexico for short vacation.

I've always found it odd that people admire a country that colonised them. This seems to happen a lot with people from Asian countries the British colonised - I used to work with an Indian guy who though that Britain was the centre of the universe and that it was a model for other countries to follow. I don't get it.

Naw, it nothing like that. I can vouch for you the 50% of this country doesnt give a tiny rat's ass about the UK, the other 50% cannot define colonising.

Im just an anglophile, due to the lack of a personal culture, I adopted Britishness. Because they are awesome. Now a Union Jack hangs above my bed, God save the Queen is in my Itunes and I declare my room a British depedency.

You seriously overestimate Ireland. Probably the most corrupt government in Western Europe, rather limited social scene (just drink!), boring cities, climate is worse than England and you seem to hate theirs.

You think other countries don't try to fix their mistakes?

I too find it odd that people are picking the country they live in as one of the most admirable (Not singling out any nationalities :mischief: ) I would have though that living or growing up in a country would mean that you're exposed to all the negative aspects of that place, and as such can find a lot to give out about. Meh, I'm gonna put it down to nationalism.

Well anyways, out of the countries I've been to the three that I'd most like to live in are Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands.
Maybe I just visited Ireland when it was warmer and England when it was the death of winter:dunno:

1.Canada, seriously, what goes on up there???

You Yanks will find out soon, and yer not going to like it. :mwaha:

As for my list (including only places I've been):

1. Canada - my home, etc.
2. UK - kind of like my second home, married one of them etc.
3. Germany - heritage reasons... that and Kraftwerk
4. Spain - just plain beautiful
5. Belgium - A really cool place despite the locals' opinion to the contrary.
6. Korea - Food, scenery, people... need I say more?

I disagree. Malaysia is like a giant version of Singpore. Singapore is the 2nd worst country in the world... Malaysia the worst.

From your postings in this thread it seems that you are a pessimist, and pessimists can not look at things objectively.

I'll go for my home of the USA, for the simple reason that despite the fact we fall flat on our faces, we can pick ourselves up afterwards and make a serious effort to fix our mistakes.

Has there ever been a country that does not do that?

Japan would be a cool place to live with all the technology and such, but I kinda like having a military where I live...

(the musuems are awesome! Plus American tourists hate musuems!)

You obviously don't hang out with the right kind of American tourist. When I was in London, I think I managed to get to all the major museums.

Seems to me Americans in particular are very quick to choose their own country...

In any case. I love France. Not sure why, but I like the language, weather and the highly developed rail transport. Germany is lso okay.

Do you think North Korea is fixing its mistakes? What about those African dictators? Generally, first world democracies are good at trying to fix their mistakes. Autocrats tend to run the gamut between fixing mistakes (rare) and running themselves and their countries into the ground.

As far as picking a country that I live in...I've been in the USA and England. If we are only talking about places you've been, then I don't have a very long list. In terms of liking a particular country's history or other things outside my personal experience, I explicitly didn't mention anything because I was under the impression you were supposed to pick a country where you have been.

That's not blind nationalism or patriotism. That's misinterpreting the rules of the thread.

So basically you're saying that you like the US because its a democracy? That isn't a specific reason to like the US - theres lots of democratic countries in the world.

Don't get me wrong I think that the US is a fantastic place, one of the best and interesting places to live, I just don't get how thats a specific reason to like the place.

San Marino-I don't know why I like this country but for some reason I can't stop thinking of it.

Germany-Good music, awesome weapons, Strong currency and Beer!

Macedonia-Nice flag and I fell sorry for them because everyone(Greece) keeps picking on them.

Japan-Cool swords, Cool people, Cool food, Cool comics(Manga) and a cool history so really whats not to love?

Tonga-Interesting little island kingdom with a fascinating history

Texas- It's like a whole other country but it's actually Texas:p

I've never understood why people find it "the most beautiful". It's nice, but the most beautiful? Come on.

Anyway, the Nazis (and the Allies) did some damage, but the real blow was delivered by the Commies.

Large parts of your capital city look like Disneyland.

Also that tower with the babies on it is hilarious.

And exactly how does Prague look like Disneyland?

Well, Disneyland or Hyrule. Medieval-looking in a really stereotypical way.

To be fair, most of Central Europe gave me that vibe.

Prague is not medieval-looking! Most of it originates from the 17th Century. And comparing Disneyland to Prague or Warsaw or Salzburg is just...degrading.

Dear sir, I have been to both Disneyland and Prague and I cannot see the link between the two.

When you live in Singapore you either don't see the bad things which means your ignorant, you see the bad things that make you hate Singapore.

It is not hard to be a pessimist in this country once you take a good look.

Whatever, it's all things older than my country!
