i'm unsure on which difficulcy-level to begin the game. i've been playing civ, civ2 & smac for years and don't think i have to begin with chieftain. but maybe i can learn the new features better when i don't have to concentrate on the game itself. on the other hand, in an easy game i could see too much of the new things to fast and spoil myself parts of the game by rushing through them.
or shall i play deity with an unknown, maybe very clever (or very cheating) AI to make sure i will not win too early? or would this be kind of a leap into the cold water and lead my total destruction? so something in between, king or prince maybe?
i know this is not a very vital question, but until october there's much time for things like these, and i'd like to hear what you are planning (or whether you've thought about this at all).

and one other thing: what could be the name for the mysterious 7th dif.-level, and will it come after deity/before chieftain/anywhere between? speculations wished!

I'm goining to play on Cheifthein to ya know get the feel of the game

I want the top-level of difficulty to be named ´just4kitten´.

I think I will play on prince, so it's not too difficult and not too easy. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

I think I read that they are going to have an additional difficulty level somewhere. Anyway I will play it on the third hardest level so it will be a bit of a challenge.

problary the second hardest. i think playing the hardest level the first time and win will ruin the game...

I think I would start on warlord. Nice and easy to get a feel for the game. I'd like to get a feel for the changes to the game before taking on a big challenge.

The risk if you start at chieftain is that you get used to the easy way and then it get's harder to work your way up.

I will start at King or so and work my way down insted untill I find my "place".

My first game would be warlord...easy enough to begin getting the hang of Civ3, but also it usually has more rules implemented than chieftan. In Civ2, I played Chieftan so long that the -50% production when switching types caught me completely by surprise when i moved up, and i promptly went back to chieftan for another few months! So warlord is a good place to start.

My guess would be the new level is between prince and king, smack in the middle...

´just4kitten´ difficulty will force you to do what you do now...lie about winning vs the SUPERIOR A.I...

Ever see the a.i quitting...I think not!

It seems that it is safest to play 1 or 2 levels below where you are, when beginning the new game. Deities should definitely go down two levels. Playing a new game at the highest or next to highest level may crush all the urge for it. Playing where you are probly will do the same, it sounds as if the game is going to be considerably different. There is no reason to risk trauma just to show how good you are.

I'm going to play all the difficulty levels starting with the easiest and working up to the hardest, one after another. Otherwise how will I be able to advise other people on the differences?

I think the first thing I'm going to do is check out all the units and techs on the tech chart if they provide one. Then I will decide where to play. Probably warlord or prince. (remind you, reading the whole instruction book takes the magic out of playing for the first few times..i love the magic!)

I usually have a difficult time with the tech charts in new scenarios, trying to place different improvemnts with there respective techs. But that's the best part of a new game, plunging head first into a world you are unfamilar with and then learning though trial and error. I'm sure many of you have experienced this and can express this sensation much better than I.

King.
A bit of a challenge is nice and the games that are challenges always seem more memorable to me. When i first bought Civ I and Civ II i began ALWAYS at King even if it meant getting beat a few times. (Although most defeats came in Civ I since 70% of what I had previously learned was applicable to the sequel.)

Prince. I want insurance to win, but chieftain and warlord are just too easy. That is, if the scale is the same with Civ3. Perhaps I'm simply better in Civ2 then I will be in Civ3 with all this resource trade negotiating stuff. I'm namely a bit of an einzelgänger.

Anyway, just as I did with my first game of Civ2 (I still remember it!!), I will not look at the tech tree and new units but will explore it tech by tech. I don't know what to pursue anyway, since I won't know what's handy. I mean, you got to experience all the stuff before you know what's actually handy and useful.

I will probably play on Chieftain (or whatever is the easiest level.) In Civ II, I myself have a pretty tough time on Chieftain. (I love the game, but I'm pretty lousy at it.)

Bronso:and one other thing: what could be the name for the mysterious 7th dif.-level, and will it come after deity/before chieftain/anywhere between? speculations wished!

IF you look at the list of names:

chieftain: village leader
warlord: overlord of several villages
prince: like OF WALES
king : ruler of a country
emperor: ruler of a BIG country, empire
diety : duh

It seems like there is a big jump between warlord and prince

I deem the new one to be

DUKE or maybe PENGUIN

I will play firstly by Warlord (or the 2nd easiest level) because the Chieftain has been
a completely tutorial level in the Civ1 and Civ2, but I want to play in an easy level.
