They signify how many years a poster has lost in this forum
(less serious answer: arrows take you to newest post, red envelope means popular thread, yellow envelope means new posts but nerdy thread, black/closed means no one posted there since you last saw the thread).
The big black dot means that you have posted in that thread.
If the title is bolded, then there have been new posts since you last read the thread (or perhaps, you haven't read the thread at all yet).
On threads with lots of posts, the red down arrow next to the title is the fastest way to get to the place you left off reading last time.
Mousing over some of the symbols will reveal their function, but not in every case.
