This thread is based on the question posed by Lonkut about starting builds, I hope he doesn't mind me asking his question again as a poll.

Of the options above, what's the first thing you build in a new city. I realise it varies based on the situation, but on average. And post comments below if you have them, its interesting to hear what peopel think.

I realise it varies based on the situation, but on average.

That's so hard, because it's probably one city in 15 for this, one in 16 for that, two in 31 for something else, and so on and on. I certainly don't have a standard first item. Doing so is awfully counterproductive, in my opinion. It's far too context-dependent to have a good answer, for me.

In one game, it might be temples. In another, workers. In another, courthouses. Overall, it's impossible to tell. Depends on the goal of the game, as well as the game circumstances, the terrain surrounding the city, the options available, my civ traits, and many other factors.

I didn't vote, because I honestly have no idea. Too many variables and I have no guess what the "right" answer for me would be over time.

I suppose the most common is not one of your choices. The MP warrior.

That would be the "right" answer for me, with worker running second, then Harbor because I tend to have a lot of fishing villages, but the Harbor never finishes.

I voted offensive. While in the beginning my cities rotate between warriors and spearmen for defense and exploration, for the duration of the game my cities are building offensive units. I love war, and try to conquer the world. One of the hardest victories IMO. While I do throw in the occasional city improvement like a marketplace, temple, or factory, I just generally build units as I'm almost in a constant state of war.

Like Arathorn, I didn't vote. It depends on the civ I'm playing, the stage of the game, my chosen victory condition, so many things... I can't begin to say that any particular thing would be my standard first build.

Like others I didn't vote because it depends. In my capital the first builds are warriors or scouts for exploration, other early cities I tend to go with warrior and worker first. One thing I don't build, since reading the Training Day Experiment, is spearmen.

Only by accident, normally by clicking on OK by mistake when the governor recommends one. I will build spearmen replacements like hoplites though.

Usually I start with building an 'exploring' unit, or the cheapest unit for MP sake. If I'm at peace and the city is relativly safe I may start with a temple.

I usually build units to send exploring, then the defensive units.

Offense is the best defense, so I usually do not build spearman, but archers.

An early barracks casn be the difference between winning and losing early battles, so someimtes I do that.

Or a temple to get production up or sutn?

If you mean the first city, then warrior for exploring. Later on it depends on whats your goal is. At conquest/domination, i build barracks at the inner ring and defenders at other citys but it could also be temple, lib or harbor. Like Arathorn say.

Take the risks and explore with settlers, when you reach the "ok" point just build another city and restart the loop... you have to cross your fingers so not to find barbarians...

I usually send a couple of explorers out first, either warriors or scouts depending on my civ, then a defensive unit, and then a settler, then a granary, then more settlers etc.

Assuming that you are not talking about one of the first few cities or I'm under attack:

My first concern is to biuld a population so I produce a grainery. As it is being built the city often grow too. If I'm feeling thretened then comes the Barricks. Then defensive units and finnaly offensive units all the time keeping an eye on the population's mood.

I think this works very early in the game however after a certain time the barbarians become too frequent.
