I have tried a foreign mission or two, and haven't been overly impressed. Is there something I am missing? One would think they'd be better to stick on a caravel than even a merchant, but I can't figure a better use than starting a golden age. Tell me if there is something better I can do!

Either Golden Age (not often) or infiltrate. Infiltration can be very useful before a war.

I actually just used one to infiltrate, then follow up with stealing corporation. That's a reasonable use of a great person, of any kind, imo. I take it back. They are a-ok with me.

If I haven't had a great person generated GA I'll use him for that. Otherwise, I just settle him, as I don't really use espionage all that much and infiltrating or building SY would be a waste.

What does it mean to steal a corporation?

What does infilitrating even do? just make a bunch of EP?

It creates a crapton of EP, which you can use to steal techs.

Stole the corporation technology i assume.

If its early game, always settle him, if i get another, scotland yard. This gives you enough EP on all civs to see what they're teching, city visibility and if you're powerful enough, city investigate. The long term benefits of settle far outweigh infiltrating imo.

Late game, Golden Age. I usually reserve these GP for golden ages, because you'll get scientists and merchants more often and you need different types of GP for ur 2nd on GA's. I usually always aim to build the Mausoleum of Mausolus, makes GA's awesome. 3 extended GA's in a row is HUGE.

Yes...stole the tech. This is going to be a fun endgame. Playing Darius,(Prince, huge, marathon) eliminated two players and took their land before they could found their second cities. Nice to get a 4000BC capital with horses ;) As a result, I have a huge nation running a straight up free market democracy from hell. Oh, and did I mention I had stone and built the pyramids? That's why I had to steal corp...didn't feel like researching constitution, as I was already in suffrage. I'll be founding mining inc in the early 1500's, and with an already significant lead in every major category.

I like to use them to permanently boost my espionage. Commerce is an inefficient source of :espionage: - you trade :science: for it 1:1. With spies, Great Spies and Scotland Yard, you get roughly twice as much espionage-related goodies as you would for science-related ones.

I personally never find espionage useless... either I have little and it's helpful because it lets me see what my opponents are researching or I have enough that stealing techs/manipulating diplomacy becomes realistic.

If I get one early, I settle. No one will have more EP than you and you can spread it around. In a standard size game with 7 players you can often see what everyone is researching if you do this.
Or you just concentrate the EP on one target to steal techs or before invasion. Then you could have infiltrated as well, but I prefer to settle it anyways, especially if I plan to settle more specialists or if I got early pyramids for representation.

Later spies I try to use for Scotland Yards or Golden Ages, depending on how much I am going to use Espionage.

infiltrate early and you'll get a great bunch of ancient/classical techs.
scotland yard can be usefull under espionage economy, on the small maps especially.

I generally use him/her to scout AI territory, as he/she is undetectable and can move freely through enemy territory. I can have a complete map of my continent this way without needing to open borders. Once that's done, well, any of the options above.

I tend to get great spies when I've built the great wall on maps where I've had lots of REX room. In that situation it's hard not to be way behind the tech pace. Infiltrating can get you a ton of techs from the tech leader that you can then on-trade. They end up much more valuable than a bulb especially after you sit your spies for the -50% cost.

that is only useful in the early part of the game.

once you go classic and later you need more EP then the GS will give you to steal a tech.

Well, I cover them with tar, set them on fire, tie them to a horse, and have them dragged back to their own capitol, screaming the whole way. :D

Oh. My Great Spies? (Jeez Lemon, you dummy!)

The first one I infiltrate, #2 I settle, #3 is a GA, and #4 makes Scotland Yard. That's the most I ever usually get in a game.

Are great spies invisible to the enemy? If so, can they be used as scouts or can they be caught?

Seems like an okay plan to use your first spy to go scout out your continent fully, and then bring him back home or infiltrate someone.
