What do you guys do "late game"

In my current game (18xx) I'm like 2 times ahead of the next best and have already exterminated 2 other civs with 3rd soon to follow. There is no way in hell I can loose right now, and it seems I just have to manage workers untill I build the ship or turns run out :/
Perhaps I should mention that this is easy setting so part of the problem is there but still even if it was harder diff I can't see AI doing anything to stop the player. Playing late game seems like a chore to me :/

What do you guys do? Are there some mods that make late game more enjoyable perhaps? Anything I can do to spice it up somehow :p

Thank you for your time!

Below monarch, I'd consider myself an abject failure if I had a massive lead in the 1800s and didn't win by at least domination...

Seriously, if you are miles ahead, wipe them out. Emperor Palpatine knew what he was talking about, IMO.

Build the manhatten project, switch production in every city to ICBM's.. then around 40 turns later, drop 2 nukes on every city you can see, before they've got a chance to build any defences.

If you're people are about to fly off into space, you might as well ruin the earth for all the other civs ;)

I get bored waiting for the end, and go for domination, or if it's late enough in the game, for a domination/diplomatic win. You know, where you win the U.N. vote because you have 55% of the votes, and the one Civ you can count on as a friend is enough to put you over the top.

Too bad there isn't a quick way to win in this situation - a knockout punch. I would rather this game be a bit more like chess, where once a win is assured, the game ends pretty quickly after that. I've experimented with changing the domination percent needed to win (two properties in an XML file), and so far I like it. On a standard map, panagea, I think I had to get around 40% to win. I think it was an improvement.

I used to play without space victory on as it seemed to kill the game in 3 prematurely. However, in 4 I have just turned it back on because late game boringness just sucks so bad in this version. Which sucks once again, it ends the game too early IMO.

My most recent game is where I turned it back on and I had an interesting late game for the first time ever. I forgot that everyone has to complete the Apollo Program. (I was thinking it was like the Manhattan Project :p ) Then Spain completed it so when I went to start building my parts, there sat the Apollo Program as an option and no parts.

I began flooding spies into people's territories. In the turns it took to complete the Apollo Program, everyone else finished thiers. I had 50% of the UN votes and Bismark was a lifelong friend. He was voting for me but I needed another AI to throw me in over the top. So I went to war with England to befriend Japan as a result. I was waiting for the next Diplomatic victory vote to win and "Tokugawa has won a space victory" :p

I either go ahead and sieze a domination victory (especilly if somoene pissed me off) or just quit and start a new game. I don't care about final score since score is just a matter of milking like crazy, so if I've completely won it's time to try something new. Occasionally I'll be in 'builder mode', then I'll try to make my empire maxed out in tech and buildings with good stacks hanging around for defense, but usually.

I just can't leave a game alone until I have "officially" won it. However, I am only mildly concerned with the score, and never milk it.

QFT, it would bug me to no end if I would just leave the game

Reason for me being an "abject failure" is that I'm quite new to the game and all the concepts so far so I'm experimenting a bit, not that I'm much better even if I try but thats another story :D

Next game I'm upping difficulty to at least warlord hopefully it'll result in a bit more interesting game. One question... Game speed at Epic/Marathon... It only changes time needed for tech to get researched? Or rest of the buildings/units as well? Standard feels darn short and still manages to feel boring end game :goodjob:

Research and builds both take longer on the slower game speeds. It allows you to spend more turns in each era and get more use out of each era's military units. You might still find the late game boring. I myself have never managed to finish an epic or marathon game, but I almost always finish my standard length games.

If you're winning that handily and are finind the endgame boring as a result, you definitely need to raise your difficulty level. Congratulations!

I find the Space Race to lead to the most tedious end-game, due to the number of techs that have to be researched in order to build the parts. Recently I got Rocketry in 1775 (start casings), Satellites in 1808 (start thrusters), Robotics in 1824 (start docking bay and Space Elevator), etc., but could not finish my ship until 1868. During this time all my cities not building spaceship parts were doing Research, so mostly all I had to do was hit the end-turn button. Dull. And the victory video didn't impress me greatly. Just for fun, I reloaded at 1790 and went for conquest, achieved in 1884 and (because of the vast increase in my territory and population) getting a better score despite finishing later.

When i know i'm gonna win, i quit and start a new game. No point in wasting my time when the end result is already decided.

LOL, I didn't intend at all to offend with the "abject failure" comment, so apologies if I did. I did apply it to myself, after all.

I'm a sarcastic Brit. It's the way I talk.

none taken my friend, as you said it applied only for you :) Still my abysmal performance had to be explained (the other guy having won space race 1800) :p People could start talking ;)

Need to look into these Epic/Marathon stuff. Did CivIII had anything similar? Darn feels like ages ago I played it

I usually make the final touches to my victory late game. Or, if I'm losing, make damn sure someone suffers! I play with Time victory off: I think its stupid that you need a 'score' at 2050.

My memory is hazy on this, but I think Civ3 had two options for game speed.

Sometimes late game combat can seem like such a chore, because the AI builds 394892384982 units, in level 3+. Maybe I am just not very good but I have a hard time in late game battles.

I always play hard enough difficulty that the ending is never boring so crank it up to whatever level challenges you.

Try switching on Permant Alliances. That should give you some extra competition in late games.
