I started a game there, first 2 civs I encountered was Kublai Khan and Montezuma, they are next door to me. Last game Ragner was next door to me. I expanded a bit towards him but there was an awful lot of space on the map left, plus we were both Hinduism, but he still declared war.

What are good strategies when warmongers are nearby? Expand out only a small bit and build an army to take their cities? Expand a lot yet arm your cities to the bone?

(BTW, i'm playing on Noble ATM.)

Kill 'em. Especially on noble, just chariot/axe rush the hell out of them and then expand at your leisure.

While I just like to take them out, patience sometimes can rule.
You know they're coming. Especially Monty. Build Axes, and wait for him to tech IW. His initial charge will not have cats so his jags will self immolate against your cities. Once the majority of his strike forces are dead..................you know the drill.

This is good advice. You need to take them out, but time it appropriately. I've rushed to early and hosed myself (even in victory). The nice thing about waiting for Monty to rush you first, is you'll get massive promotions as he wastes his army on your defenders. You can also use the time to get your economy in shape.

Add me to rah and Jack_Funk group. Just add alphabet to your tech path and get IW from Monti and HBR from Kahn. Hope you can build a few spear.

Also if you want to minimize the AI pillage situation, build a city close to his empire as his target. Leave only two defensive units (for Kahn and 1 is good for Monti) in there but keep others nearby. It will draw them over. We know that a poorly defended city is an invitation for AI war mongers. Just remember to also have an offensive force to go take his cities.

I usually antagonize AI up to Emperor and occationally on Immortal. Let them bring there second stack into my target city and send my attack force around to attacl there flanks. 1 ot 2 unit defended cities are what is in the rear. Once their second stack is dead, the defenders advance. Works well with mongers.

Not care about them, and do what I would normally do. It's noble, they aren't going to field that many troops. Or you can just kill them.

How do I handle more then one Kill On Sight leaders? I'll give you one guess :)

Seriously though I try to chariot/ax rush the first one and kill the rest as soon as possible. Im not good at getting off more then one ax/ chariot rush in a time period I probably need to learn to be more aggressive. I do think its better to be the attacker in these situations burn their lands and cities not your!!!!

I really do believe that one cannot live with Monty, Shaka ect... unless you are way stronger so its better to just remove the threat as soon as possible.

Are you guys saying Axeman/Chariot rush because getting Swordsmen would be too late?

Swordsmen rushes will work on Noble, but by that time the AI will most likely have a source of metal, and be producing Axes which completely kill the Swords rush. Also Iron Working is a semi expensive tech for it's time period, so it is A LOT slower of a rush than Chariots or Axes.

You play noble? Yeah, you can just kill them all...but I'll give you advice for higher difficulty levels since I assume you want to move up anyway. On a higher dif level, in this situation, you would have to pay very close attention to diplomacy because fighting 2v1 makes it very difficult to even defend your land, and basically impossible to take any land, fighting 3v1 means you're dead. You need to make sure you are not worst enemies with more than 1 of them, get them to fight each other instead of you, which means giving into war demands, switching religions/civics, whatever it takes. Give in, trust me, it's worth it. Then, when they start fighting each other, build up your forces and wait for them to destroy each others' military for a bit, then join in the fight and stomp all over one of them, taking all of his/her land.

Great, after another game Boudica declared war on me and Shaka, whom I never even encountered except for "there shall be peace in our time" has declared war on me. I know he is very far away, but still, the declaration of war.

I play on BUG mod. I am 1.5 military ratio in the green againt Roosevelt, 1.3 against Caesar and 1.3 against Sitting Bull. All these people Boudica dislike too, yet she declared war on me?!?! When I am way stronger than Roosevelt.

Beeline alphabet, then go for confu, convert shaka and make them fight against each other (bribe with techs to declare war)

First of all this is noble level. The Ai start with warriors. They won't get a second city till 2000bc??? They will get bronzeworking/ chariots much later.

By 2000bc you should be aiming for a third city and should have a capital at size 3-4 and 2 or so workers at least.

So come 1000bc hopefully you have a military resource and can have a few defenders if you chose to play peacefully.

Overall diplomacy is key, that and military power.

Avoid adopting a religion if all the war mongers are in a different religion. Sharing religion helps get many Ai to pleased.
Don't be afraid to gift techs to get Ai away from annoyed. Don't be afraid to bribe Ai into war with each other. Also to ask for 10 gold for 10 turns peace.

Don't be afraid to rush a neighbour once you have a second city and a military resource hooked up. On Noble you should be able to rush 2-3 Ai quite easily as they are slow to reach archers.

Your problems probably stem from the start. Do you build workers as your first build once you settle your capital?
Perhaps not expanding enough and poor diplomacy.

Overall if you want proper advice upload the save.

I'm sorry, but I don't have a save for the specific example of Khan and Monty near. I just left the game when they declared war at the same time and I didn't have a good army yet.

Well, something that always help, get them in the same religion as yourself.
Monty really likes that.

Just to poke my nose in here - if you have Stone or IND, a Great Wall here means mucho Great Generals. Even more so if you're IMP. What is it then, like ten home turf kills for the first GG?

If you're playing noble, just build warriors and warrior rush your closest neighbor. Their cap will probably be better than anything else you're going to find. If you time it right and get their worker, you can have 2 cities and a worker before turn 30.
