Lyrics over music.
Music over Lyrics.
Other (specify):

now, to hope i can remember all these when i go to do the poll, haha.

Just if it sounds good or not, I have no set guidelines and don't believe in trying to limit myself. So I guess none or all of the above, however you look at it.

I like most of those traits in music at least some of the time. However, I would have to say I rarely, if ever, like dance music, music with no surprises at all (which I take to mean the same thing as completely conventional and formulaic), and music which is happy (I have nothing against happiness, of course, but it's not usually portrayed well enough in music IMO).

My absolute favorite thing in a song (which would go under other) is powerful emotion and/or meaning.

Same for me.

That's why the songs I have on iTunes are essentially a random collection of songs I think sound nice by a whole bunch of different artists. Though they all fall into some form of rock.

Depends on what I'm looking for.

Mostly I suppose my favourite songs are sad, complex, but with a strong tune.

Catchy tune, music over lyrics and the song has to convey some sort of emotion depending on what I want.

Well, I'm not much of a dancer, so that's not important; anything with a beat will get me to tap my feet or something.

Thinking is good, a line that stays in my head for days and applies to life is a plus.

It's good to try new things, but nothing too drastic.

No surprises is also good; I like a key change or something, but that's about as crazy as I need to get on a daily basis.

Trippy? No. Fast? Sometimes, but not too much so. Complex? Not always, but it doesn't necessarily hurt.

Sad? Only if it's genuine. Happy? Only if it's genuine. Sloppy? No, but loose is good. Tight? Only if the emotion is preserved.

The lyrics and the music need to complement each other; the lyrics are only there to tell what the music is already saying for those who may not be able to communicate in that language. Really, lyrics are often completely un-necessary for master notesmiths, but master wordsmiths can really use them to advantage.

Other? I like really filthy music. Not explicit lyrics, mind you, but I want to hear the expression in the guitar, I want to know that the drummer is sweating bullets, and I want to know that the harp is screaming in pure agony.

Does it put a groove in mah move and a pep in my step?

High musicality is also important. Extra credit for well writen lyrics, a horn section, or a harmonica.

Fun!
Originality!
Power!
Cool Stuff!

Complex lyrics with no surprises. Just hard rock awesome.
