Civ is the ONLY game I've played since I was 8 years old on the original nintendo that can thoroughly entertain me single player. But I am a competitive sort, and I will be slapping people around on multiplayer sooner than later. For now I'm still learning and practicing on single ;) -dok

Yup, yup. I've only played about 5 Directip Multi games, I got my self handed to me bigtime.

Not really looked into online play. I don't have much time anyway.

I'd probably get killed so fast if I played multiplayer, so I tend to stick to games that I have a chance of winning

Single player mostly, though I am taking part in the Off Topic multi-player game and i'll probably try and play some multiplayer games more in the future!

The closest I've ever got to multi-player was participating in one of the Civ3 Demogames. It's single-player all the time for me.

The question is not very well set :

I play Multiplayer but Hot Seat (so not online) => And what if LAN ? This is not online too but multiplayer.

I tried multiplayer once and got my butt whipped. I was out of the game in like a half hour. Pretty bad.

Both.

You'll never be a civ master unless you frequently play against real people. The AI can't come close to what can happen online.

I used to play single player on monarch and emperor levels, but for the last couple of months, I have been playing MP online exclusively. It is just more fun competing with other people.

I like taking my time to play, up to 15 minutes or more for a single turn, so singleplayer it is for me.

Both.

Playing against real human being is a blast and really shows how weak the AI is.

There are 100% different strategies & tactics needed in the two.

I only play Single Player. I prefer it to multiplayer.

my skill level is not yet high enough to give someone a challenge on multiplayer.

...but that seems to be a general feeling. those of us who have the lower skill levels should try playing against each other. this could help us raise our skill. and then again maybe a succession game with others on a lower level would be helpful, so we can play together until we feel comfortable enough with our skills to play against each other...

Mostly single player, since few people seem to want to play a full laid back game of Civ 4 in multiplayer. I have no interest in blazing turn timer games on duel sized maps, which leaves multiplayer a bit limited.

People shouldnt be afraid to play online. you learn very very fast. Sure you may get your asses kicked, but I guarantee you that within 5 games youll be pretty good and able to keep up with others.

I personally cant stand single player. Its just not challenging enough. Upping the difficulty doesnt make the AI smarter, it just gives it cheats. Not fun at all.

I would play multiplayer more, but I just play to sporadically, an hour here, two there, and half and hour every once in a while, only once in a while can I play in large enough sections of time that would enable me to play multiplayer.
