What do you think about the Great Wall improvements?

I've not yet built the Great Wall in C3C, but I've been forced to fight civs that owned it twice. The free walls in all settlements really slowed me down during the early game wars. I need to remember to bring a bigger army against it from now on. Anyone else run in to this improved Great Wonder yet?

I was using many trebuchets to conquer cities. Then I ran into the English who had built the Great Wall. Their units were virtually immune to bombardment; that is until I went and conquered the city that had the Great Wall in it. They had a garrison of 4 pikemen. I lost somewhere around 10 mideval infantry.

Those complaining about bombardment should keep that in mind. Instead of tweaking bombardment (which I like the way it is), perhaps the solution is to increase the AI's likelihood of building walls.

How is this different?
Didn't it always give free walls?

Nope.

I've managed to build it in my one Conquests epic game. All the free walls were nice, but no one ever attacked me, so I didn't get to enjoy `em.

Maybe they didn't attack you because you had the Great Wall.

I think they changed it to what it SHOULD be.

Did they increase needed shield amount too though? If not that's pretty small..

I didn't notice that they did, but I never have bothered to find the cost for wonders.

im my recent game as the byzantines, i had to fight the great wall-owning carthaginians with their 2.3 numidians using knights. it was VERY irritating, i lost 50+ knights until i took their city that owned it, and suddenly the going got much easier from that point on

This is definitely a wonder worth playing keep-away with, don't want a rival bagging this one.
