What do you think of Japan?

I think Japan has an interesting culture overall. Interesting food, interesting history, interesting forms of entertainment. Interesting alphabet and language that I never intend to study. And some interesting women. Maglev is pretty neat. Overall, I see a lot of one upmanship-type technological displays in Japan., especailly in robotics, but I respect there are professional researchers in fields of science that I'm interested in.
As far as the commercial goods go, I'm a devotee of Samsung.
I really don't like the Hentai stuff though.

Japan is great. They used to have Hara kiri and now they have Issei Sagawa.

It;s okay, China is better...

Japan is probably my third favorite country(after Austria and Switzerland). I like almost everything about it. The technology they have over there is amazing(Think the iPhone is technology advanced? Tell that to the guy watching live satellite T.V. on his phone), the food is excellent and the culture is pretty cool.

Some anime and manga is cool, not all. Tech is cool also. As a dude of Chinese descent, I feel they have yet to truly apologize for their crimes during WWII towards all parties including and not limited to, East Asians, Southeast Asians, South Asians, Pacific Islanders, Americans, Australians and so on. Especially when you have relatively large right-wing groups continue to deny the atrocities. Oh yeah, you guys churn out some sick stuff.

Explain why we, the current generation of Japanese, should atone for crimes we did not commit? The crimes of our ancestors =/= our crimes.

Chinese people churn out sick stuff too. Every nation does. I don't know why the world singles out Japan as this "sick" nation.

A sincere apology is not hard to do.

Unfortunately, some people's view of Japan revolves around celebrity cannibals, tentacle rape and the Nanking Massacre.

Japanese reputation in the eyes of Westerners (and other Asians) have yet to recover from WWII.

Just because someone's father was a murderer doesn't mean that that person's son/daughter has to atone for his sin.

Right, it doesn't. However, white-washing textbooks and having politicians visit shrine of war criminals doesn't exactly sends a good message either.

We've made our apologies for World War II.

However, this doesn't explain why our current government has to apologize for the actions our ancestors.

I believe a large portion of Japanese, not just neo-conservatives, believe that Hirohito had absolutely nothing to do with the war starting, despite his major role in planning it out. I read that a Japanese mayor was shot by a conservative because he said Hirohito was partially to blame.

Also, the Nanking Massacre is still not recognized by many Japanese historians, either due to sheer neglect or acknowledgment while trying to tone down on their estimates. The legacy of this negligence is the fact that while everyone has heard of the Holocaust, few have heard of the Nanking Massacre, although post-WW2 politics had something to do with this as well. (Both Taiwan and Communist China wanted to be officially recognized by Japan after 1949, and thus didn't talk about WW2 or reparations much)

I admire Japan for all her historical accomplishments.

I don't really like a lot of anime, but the works of Hayao Miyazaki (film), and Osamu Tezuka (manga) are simply BRILLIANT. Some of the best storytelling I've ever encountered.

Japanese culture is exceedingly strange to me in many ways. The odd sexual fetishes and latent xenophobia are odd, but then again I've never been to Japan so I can't comment too well.

That's ridiculous

I have been in Japan for quite a while and knew some Japanese (had a Japanese gf for several years). Japanese are very good at portraying themselves as the true victims of WW2 due to Hiroshima and Nagaski bombings. Herding every single Japanese kid to Hiroshima to shock them and make them feel victimized by the Americans. Other than that, text books continue to deny the worst atrocities committed by the Japanese such as the Nanjing massacre or unit 731. The youth I spoke to in the nineties were completely oblivious to all the atrocities committed.

On a government level, Japan fails to acknowledge the extent of guilt and horror.
of course this has also something to do with the fact, that the USA didn't prosecute Hirohito.

Just look at what Germany did. But I guess the Japanese are too afraid to admit that their forefathers were war criminals. It's the stupid Asian face thing...

e.g....what did you have in mind? (I'm curious.)

How in less than a century they went from agrarian backwards hermit country into a great world superpower.

And after WWII, how they managed to have a miraculous recovery.

Oh, okay. Both of those are vastly exaggerated (the first one much more so than the second), but they're also both pretty valid reasons to like Japan. :goodjob:

Of course, if as some are saying the Japanese of today oughtn't get punished for what their forefathers did, why give them credit for the same? ;)
