So, Japan is another country. However, I admire its literature and its art, much in the same way I admire Spanish-language literature or Italian Baroque art. In that these things are all the product of a national effort, but that it stops there --- I am no more Japanese for liking these things. I think that a lot of people's disdain for the country and its culture come from seeing random kids considering themselves quintessentially Japanese.

I mean, some of the things the Japanese did... I mean, even the British and the Germans weren't as bad. Like, the Japanese shot at medics, even the Wehrmacht didn't do that. Being Chinese-American, I don't know... Interestingly enough, I know yesboii personally. I don't know, I kinda wanted to say something.

There's a certain pressure not to leave before others do, but it doesn't stop people leaving when they have to. It's just a keeping up with the Jones' kind of thing. You just don't want to be seen as generally leaving earlier than your colleagues. It's not sooooo different to other countries.

This varies by company and group but the extreme is still very common today.
You can even see it at the foreign corps in Japan. MS is more like the US campus but Oracle does this and the experience is very different from the US campus.

Incidentally, the only thing worse than a mind-numbingly boring and endless Japanese meeting is a suffacatingly formal company drinking party.

You must have been to that party where everyone could handle their liquor.
