The basic idea behind ascending is to merge humankind - or what has become of it - with Planet.
The fungus re-enacts a millenia long cycle of growth. When the growth reaches a certain limit, the fungus will become self-conscious - but only to learn that it has exceeded the limits of Planet. It will die and fall back to the beginning.
Ascending means to fuse both what is contained in the datalinks, as well as individual personalities with the neuronal net that the fungus is supposed to be.
Like shifting to a new form of existence.
Story goes, that the faction which will reach transcendence first, will imprint its ideal most deeply into the new conciousness.

Maby something with: Everyones mind being assimilated into a hypercube-super-computer of somesort that releases these cybernetic Nanowires throughout the planet that *infects* in a perasitic style. Once it infects all your enemys, the computer controls everyone and your faction become the artifical masters of the world????!!!!!
