What exactly is the AD?

Ok, I recently won a regent game by means of giant spaceship. I decided to play a few more rounds, however, and unleashed the apocalyptic hell-fires unto my enemies. Shortly after launching my first couple of nukes, I got several messeges each turn telling my that the that either specifi nations had declared war( e.i. the English have declared war on us!) OR AD had declared war on us!( I went to the foreign advisor and saw that several nations had declared war on me after the AD message).

Anyway, my question is what exactly is the AD? Is it some sort of shadow anti-nuclear-war organization, or just a bug roaming through my game?

Also, not really having to do with the topic, but if the AI uses nuclear weapons first, are you forced to go to war?

AD means Anno Domini, latin for "in the years of our lord".
AD is used as a mark to know in what year we are.
for example we are in 2004 AD.

Seems like you were right Mercade. I just went back and failed to reproduce the text. Oh well, thinking about a crazy shadow government organization was fun while it lasted ;)

Since the AD and BC things were stablished by the church now days scholars want to change AD for CE as for Current Era, for BC i don't now.

Before Christ if I am not mistaken.

BC is now called BCE, for "before current era", I believe. But I thought they still used AD since it's so entrenched.

Mercade is right.

Messages about the AD doing something is a known bug in the game. It was featured as Screenshot Of The Day some time ago (IIRC).

*sigh*
Anyone else finding the whole CE/AD debate a bit obsessive?
I mean: you may believe or not, but it's not like putting AD after a date is a confession.
Moreover, being a scientist and ignoring the single biggest influence on culture in the western world (til John Lennon stated that Beatles were bigger than Jesus :p ) imhso degrades the basis of your work and thereby your own work. I know Xen disagrees, but Christian thinkers and scholars was the light of the MA, again imhso.

I once nuked the Zulu's in a Regent game and everyone declared war on me. it went like

The Indians declared war on us!!!
The Persians declared war on us!!!
The Mongolians declared war on us!!!
The AD declared war on us!!!

I just though.......... eh?? I was panicing I thought that aliens were attacking me or that space ship I launched way back in Civ 2 that didn't make it to Alpha Centauri before someone else was coming back to haunt me!

Well I guess it's the famous "political correctness" hammer that hit the nail of common sense again... At least that would have made more sense if the "referring" date was completely changed, but keeping as a reference the birth of Christ and pretending to "de-religious" it by using the term "Current Era" instead of "AD" is so hypocrit...

edit : Steviejay,

Just another sign of "political correctness".

Of course, during the course of my lifetime, I have never once referred to the current year as **** AD. And I am a practicing catholic. It actually has no bearing on my day to day life. Only has reference in my civ life and just as a marker to when the game ends.

edit: On topic. It is a bug like others have stated (just though I should tie this post to the actual thread topic)

if it is about political correctness would they have to change the starting point other that the birth of christ because of it being religous? If so, then when could be a good date to start? Yumbo?
