Can anyone recommend a good graphics card under£50. The rest of my system hits the recommend spec so only need to replace that thank god.

Spend a little more and get an ATI 5670 as a minimum. Anything less really isnt any good for this game.

Cards under £50 wont run anything well, Civ V included.

ATI 5670 - £70

or this is significantly better:

ATI 5750 - £85

Try a google shopping search to see if you can find either one cheaper elsewhere. Actually, I just tried that, and I dont think you can get them for any less.

Heres a 5670 on Preorder for £55. However, at that price I dont think they are going to be available for a very long time, you could try Emailing their customer support to find out.

no such thing, a good GPU is the Radeon 5770 which can be had for as little as $125

There aren't any "good" cards below £50 :p

A few flavours of "okayish":
HD 4650 DDR2 £45
HD5550 DDR3 £50
GT 240 DDR3 £50

Nothing to write home about, but not outright crappy (that would be 5450/220 and below). All of those those should work around medium settings for Civ5. But if you can afford something better, i would not recommend any of those ;)

I have a 1 GB GT220 graphics card. Will that be adequate to run Civ5?

If you can come up with an extra $45 I recommend the GTX 460

If you don't have to play the game on day one, what you could do is simply wait for the game to be released, and ask how the game runs with different video cards. If the game happens to run on high with a 5770 with good results, then get the 5770. If they game is choppy with the 5770, get the GTX 460.

However, I will say, that you certainly wouldn't go wrong with the GTX 460. It is a nice card.
