What is a Future Tech?

After I finish researching the complete tech tree the advisor shows that i'm still researching: it's called Future tech. I researched several of these but it never told me that I had completed the research or anything. Also, I could not find any benefit whatsoever. What is it? Is it nothing?

The best I can figure out is that it does absolutely nothing. Although it does add a point or two to your score (definitely not worth spending money on!)

I've only managed to get Future Tech in one game, where I got up to around level 5 or 6 but I didn't get a single point for that...
