Strategies for play vary based on the level of the game selected (noble, monarchy, diety). When most people post, what level are their strategies referring to if not stated?

I am an avid player but still struggle to dominate playing monarch. I seem to only be able to overtake the other civs at about Robotics.

It varies. Check the Strategy and Tips forums and see that there are a whole range of players and strategies and levels, with most being post-Noble, Prince, Monarch and Emperor. There are series on Immortal and Deity games as well as lower down the spectrum, but mostly Noble and higher.

Personally I am still on Warlord - it is a challenging enough level but still gives the satisfaction of a decent enough game. I am finding I enjoy it enough not to leave and go up to Noble until I have exhausted the leaders and used proper tactics like axe-rushing, diplomacy, constructing decent stacks, learning how to build alliances, religions, use Great People effectively and so on. I had to practice a lot on Chieftain raising my game to the level of aggression needed to take on Warlord, but once I had that going well I moved up and I have never really wanted to try Noble.

Normally people who write strategy threads will let you know which level they are working with.

That's nothing to be ashamed of. It's not a race. It's not a matter of rushing to victory, but getting there when you want to be. Maybe your strategy is effective, but it's just not quick. Some ppl race to victory by bonking skulls. Other ppl take their time and peacefully build to victory.

Two different strategies can be just as effective, but some might be quicker in their execution.

I think the general consensus is that anybody who plays anything less than noble gets burned at the stake.

Should we start with Crow? I think she might be a witch...do you think we can devise a test to prove our suspicion? Throw her in the river, maybe, to see if she floats :p

Hey, not everyone can be at the level of greatness that is Noble. At least it's not Settler.

I'm a Warlord, and I'm trying to figure out how to get specialized cities and stuff. I can get the Production city fine, and maybe the Military one, but the GP Farm//Specialist city? Forget it.

In my experience, every difficulty seems impossible at first. I started out on Warlord (in vanilla) and won my first game with a spaceship victory fairly easily, going to war with hardly anyone. Maybe it's gotten harder in BtS.

When I tried Noble, I was all like "hey, the AI actually declares war on me and I can't expand my empire to infinite." It was quite a step up from Warlord. I also couldn't get every single wonder if I played an industrious civ. Whoa.

Then finally I got the courage to try Prince. I remember what happened my first game- I was busy conquering some Barbarian settlements and Genghis Khan Gengh-raped (sorry) my capital with Keshiks. Taught me a valuable lesson. Eventually, I learned to build a military early on and Prince became my new official level. Over-expansion also became a major issue on this level.

When BtS came out, I actually found it much easier in single-player than Warlords, which I never quite got the hang of. This got me to try Monarch. At first I was like, "this sucks, the AI cheats and I can only build 3 cities before my economy implodes." But I kept at it, and now I can win about half the time if you don't count all the games I quit early on due to bad starts.

As much as I'd like to say I eventually moved on to emperor, the truth is I haven't tried it yet :( too scared. Maybe someday.

But I'm comfortable having ascended to the monarch level, so I continue to play it. It's still quite challenging for me, so I feel no need to go higher.

In answer to the OP, I have always tended to assume that everyone plays at the same level I play at

I'm (-2.62, -2.46). You?
I just took that test! (-2.75,-2.46)! Wow!

as long as YOU have fun it doesn't matter what level you play at.

If some1 gives you . .. .. .. ., because of the level of play..let him

She turned me into a newt...

Generally, I'd say any strategy that works on Warlord also works on Emperor; you just need to execute it well and maybe make some concession in other places.

You should still be able to get any single wonder you want badly, you should still be able to get the majority if you choose to, you should be able to out-expand anyone else, you should be able to secure an early tech lead and you should be able to conquer a neightbour or two.
Just not necessarily all at once. On low levels your 'real' strategy might not be apparent because you will achieve many incidental goals without even trying.

On Deity I usually don't have a recognisable strategy because the game consists of finding something to leverage, then abusing the heck of the game. Apart from that, most strategy posts are applicable to any level really.

From monarch I find that you can win when you conquer your first neighbour. You cannot REX by settlers as quick as AI imperialistic leaders plus they have not so much maintance costs as you... also you need to plan more in higher levels. I think everyone posts as they do atm, when you play on settler then you do not advice others but I think nobody plays that lever seriously more than 1 or 2 games also chieftain. First challenge comes in warlord but not enough.

I'm playing on Prince now, after moving up slowly over the past two-three weeks. I'm probably gonna be on Prince for a little while though.

But the important thing is that you have fun. Sure, my goal is to eventually win a Deity game, but I'd still rather have fun than worry about that right now.

Getting back to the subject of the post, I think most people are able to assume by the post what level the person plays at. Either low (settler-noble), middle (prince-emperor) or high (immortal-deity). Just don't forget that assuming can make an ass outta u and me :p

I play on noble and sometimes Prince. I do think that the average level of play is around that area unless its stated.

I'm playing Monarch now and I think I've come to a sad conclusion; As long as you can wage half-decent wars, you will win. The AI is so ungodly bad at war that it's something a human player can easily exploit.

I've recently begun winning on Monarch. I don't wait long to move up once I've won a few games. I like to be constantly :goodjob:challenged...

I still only play Noble. I know it is low but I have fun and thats what its all about. I might consider going up to he next level for a bit more challenge.

I started on warlord and am currently playing on prince level.

When I start a topic here, I try to always say what level I'm, what speed, what kind of map, etc.

As to the poster who suggested that things that work on warlord level are likely to work on monarch level, well, that really depends. I've found that some things definitely need to be "unlearned" when managing a higher level--some of them worked well at a lower level simply because the player has advantages over the AI on those levels...

shulec,

I am an Emperor+ player. (I've beat a few Deity games, but I wouldn't call myself a true Deity player.) However I learn things from even Noble and below players all the time. Their skill level is unimportant if they teach me that there is a whipping penalty for whipping something with zero hammers produced.

Many strategies work regardless of skill level, and skill level becomes less important as you get into more general strategies.

Build a bridge out of her.
