What is the best civ in multiplayer?

I agree. But, I like them even better in Warlords with the Aggresive//Protective combo.

What's Protective? (I don't have Warlords)

Protective Trait: Free Drill 1 AND City Garrison Promotions for archery & gunpowder units. Double production for Walls & Castles (meh).

Combined with Aggressive, Toku is a monster in MP. Protective gives powerful defenders to handle counterattacks (coupled with Feudalism, then Rifling). Aggresive allows City Raider promotion to the Samurai (UU) which then get upgraded to Rifles. Add in the cheap barracks from Aggro and things get crazy.

I just played a one city challenge last night and dominated the other guys by more than 50% in score, and reached about 500 points of research within my capital... I had english, that's for sure the civ to take in OCC.

Best MP Civ really depends on the Era:

For Ancient, imperialistic is very strong. Genghis Khan is probably the best, with Aggressive for stronger Axes/Spears and Imperialistic for cheaper settlers.

For Classical and Medieval I prefer Ramesses II, but the strong Ancient civs like Genghis are also still powerful.

In Renaissance, Isabella, Ramesses II, Brennus, and Louis/Napoleon are all very good. Russia is usually banned in Renaissance games because the Cossack is so strong vs Cavalry. They really limit strategy. Stalin or Peter would probably be the best Renaissance civs overall.

In Industrial, any of the England's are great, especially Elizabeth. The Redcoats are extremely hard to kill with Riflemen or Grenadiers, so you can choke your opponent hard with them.

In Modern/Future, any spiritual or philosophical civ is great. Saladin in Vanilla and Gandhi in Warlords are probably best.

Gandhi is great in every era, in both Vanilla and Warlords, so I did not mention him specifically. He truly shines in Ancient, Ren, and Future.

In the OCC tournament, in the last Clan Championship Cup (see http://www.myleague.com/civ4players for information), the winning team was composed of Ramesses II and Shaka. In the CCC before that, the winning team was composed of Gandhi and Hatty. Basically, while you are building cottages or scientists, I'll be killing you. :hammer:

Ancient: Inca for Builders - Ind/Fin+C1 quecha. Warmonger: Persia/Julius Caeser - Imp + Immortals/Preatorians. Both very nasty. Compromise: Ramses II - Spi/Ind + War Chariots. Gandhi is another great all around choice.

Civs that are better in team games: Zulu - Impi are stronger in a team setting where horses was very prevalent early and choking somone early is critical Mali - Skimishers - same reason as above, Getting one off a hill without horse or metal is impossible.

Well that's true that I had some difficulty to build my first ten cavalry, with only two or three hills and a horse... even with a forge it took 3 or 4 turns to build one... but by the time I built them, no one had gunpowder so I wiped out easily every of my 3 opponents. I had an academy, oxford academy, great library, two scientists, a library, a university, an observatory and a certain number of cottages.
