I usually pop 3 out first thing, so I never remember which one is the first one.

In most situations three is optimal, in my view.
But on the big map, three is not enough to manage to open whole map before other factions will claim it and cut off the free ways. And you steel need to return them for modules refill.

My explorers often run into hostile aliens while looking for expedition sites. Or someone declares war on me, so the explorer dies because it's out there all alone.
