I think the options pretty much speak for themselves. It's the traditional 2-dimensional political spectrum, with my own twist added. Answer as best you can, choosing one social and one economic option, also fill in one of the last two options. The last two are of particular interest to me, and I think they are rarely discussed.

Twist: The first one "Society's well-being should be maximized, even if that disagrees with my previous answers" should be taken to mean that Society's well-being comes first and foremost, even if that means that we discover your current political views are dead wrong in the future.

The second one means that your current political views are fundamental, and more important that society's overall well-being.

Take "well-being" to mean long-term survival and happiness of the populace.

Authority+Tradition > Personal Freedoms
The Economy should mostly be left to its own devices
Both Twists (because I believe they are one and the same :p)

Of course if you value maximizing society's well-being, then you think your current beliefs do that. The point of the question is "would you give up and replace your current political views if it ends up they DON'T maximize society's well-being?"

"FRREEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!"

Maximize personal freedom and leave the market to its own devices.

So why aren't people voting on the third set of options? (I know some are, but a lot aren't).

The historic role of the British government is to rule the UK by consent, and others by force

The current role of the British government is to rule the UK by force

Personal freedom should be maximized except with things I really don't like. People shouldn't be able to do those things. Also, there should be a free market except I should get free stuff from the government and the government should provide a lot of social services without me paying much taxes.

Bright day
Goverment's role: its' own survival. It survives by consent of its citizens, whose content it gains through services it offers.

Personal Freedom with some regulations, and the market should be mostly left to it's own devices, but society's well being should be maximized.

I vote: 'Social: Personal Freedom should be maximized' and 'Economic: The market needs a good amount of government intervention'. When it comes to twist I voted 'Society's well-being should be maximized, even if that disagrees with my previous answers'........though experiance and knowledge has led to those previous answers for the reason that they maximise society's well being.

I would like to add that I find it contradictory that several posters are voting 'social:maximum personal freedom' yet have made many posts in the past (particulary on drugs, civil liberties and gay rights issues) that contradict this.

If this is particularly aimed at me, you might be settled to hear that I've recast myself as more of an ultra-libertarian in that regard, as of late. I no longer care what people do with their lives, as long as they don't affect me.

John, I did notice that you moved over 4 points south on the Compass lately...

The first two questions are academic, since, as you say, the "Twist" is the important one. It's an easy answer for me: "Society's well-being should be maximized, even if that disagrees with my previous answers". I strongly believe in that statement.
