What is your first game looking like? (It's almost here)

I finally committed and pre-ordered the deluxe edition. I have been trying to figure out what leader I want to use in my first game. So far, I was between Xerxes and Amina. I know my first game I will play as Greece as that is my own personal tradition. I was sure what victory type I wanted to chase but am partial to trying an economic victory because I have always wanted an economic victory conditions in Civ.

Then I made the comment to a friend about the game costing me a "Benjamin Franklin" and the joke, "I should play my first game as him since he bought it" and now, ironically, I seem to be glued to the idea. First, I realized Franklin guarantees America. I find the prospector UU interesting and I do like that it is an economic civ so better to make an economic push.

So I am pretty sure my first game will be:

Leader: Ben Franklin

Civs: Greece -> Spain (probably) -> America

I hope for two "random" buttons, one for the first civ, one for the leader. And I'll play on a full random map, if that is still an option. Otherwise on a Terra map. I'm not sure on size (likely 4 civs on the home continent) and victory types yet - those will come from the civ, leader, and how the game plays out.

Probably playing as Lafayette, but Tecumseh is still in the running.

Greece -> Normans -> France (or Germany, if it’s in the game and looks cooler)

A.I. civs on Homelands:
Augustus of Egypt
Charlemagne of Persia
Machiavelli of Rome

A.I. civs in Distant Lands:
Ben Franklin of Mississippi
Isabella of Maya

Two continents, with islands in the ocean connecting the two at the start of Exploration

My default settings typically go with a huge game with everything random.
My reason for a smaller map size in the first game:
- checking how good my computer can run the game (if cloud gaming isn't available in the early access)
- not trusting FXS that the legacy path progress is balanced well for anything else besides standard (age could be too short)
- a bit more of a leisurely game
- don't want to be spoiled with too many leaders and civs at once

I'm firmly on having my first game start with the Mississippians, but my thoughts on leader and downstream civs keeps changing.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards Pachacuti leading Mississippians->Inca->Mexico

I'm also going to do Machiavelli, Lafayette, and Ibn Battuta shortly thereafter.

I like this idea and may use it; thank you!

I originally thought Achaemenid Xerxes with Egypt > Abbasids > ???, but as I don't like the Exploration culture game much I'm leaning towards Pachacuti as Mississippians > Inca > Mexico. However, I might do Han > Ming > Qing, but I'm not certain what leader yet.

Deffo starting with the Maya, then likely into the Inka. Unsure currently which modern civ I'll go with besides Mexico as the default option, and presumably playing as Pachacuti unless another leader sounds more fun while I'm staring at the selection screen.

Urban sprawl.

I keed. I keed.

Caesar, Rome, maybe Spain after, Huge map, one of the slowest speeds.

one of the slowest speeds.
I usually play on Epic. I'm debating whether my first game should be on Epic or if I should see how Standard feels first.

Yeah, I generally give standard a go, but usually feels a bit too fast for a huge map. In general, I try to correlate map size to speed as something that doesn't scale is the unit movement speed. If the map is big, game can fly by before you can properly explore and expand.

Greece with a Greek leader. Cant really say when that will be since 1. i am not buying on relase and 2. we still dont have a leader for Greece. At least for starters, i cannot stomach playing Greece with some other leader. It feels as much a teratogenesis as CIV switching.

I think Egypt > Shonghai as Hathsepsut

Or possibly Ibn Battuta starting with Egypt
Just for his trade maps endeavor

I suspect my first game will be roaming around the map a lot to see all those different building styles

Pretty much the same here. And should be playing fully random games for a while.

Which is pretty much what I said in a similar thread that exists back a few months. I would have liked to play a full Japan game if we had a Japan version for all areas, but not long after we learned that wasn't going to be the case.

In general, my plan is to almost always go random on the biggest map size available, with the base amount of civs for that size or sometimes less to enjoy more building. While I may see myself sometimes picking an initial civ, it is very unlikely I will play games (besides the aforementioned full japan one time) where I decide beforehand what civ path I will take, but instead see what hand I will be dealt with and what fits better how my civ is at the end of an age.
