The World of Skin by Swans (1988)

One of the deeper cuts of '80s 'alternative', something you might find on a shelf with Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Foetus, and Einsturzende Neubauten. Skin was originally a side-project, but the compilation The World of Skin has since been re-released as a Swans album. Swans got some attention back in the day for a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" that was, improbably, even more dirge-like than the original. They do a droning cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna be Your Dog" that's pretty good, too. Swans won't be for everyone, but if you're looking for something off the beaten path...

Don't know if this song is too romantisizing of the old Confederates with all the talk of dixies, rebels, Lee, the winter of '65, and the fall of Richmond and such. But the song and mood it conjures up is so bloody good.
