    I've gone for Sikhism as it's the religion that's followed by the most people that isn't already in the game. I find it suprising that Sikhism isn't in the game, and a religion like Daoism (Taoism) is, when it's "had its' day" (for want of a better word), and is for the most part only practiced in Thailand.

    I picked Sikhism, because:
    a) I don't think that adding sub-denominations is all that important - if you want to feel the effects of a Protestant Revolution-type event, make it a mod (why simulate religious factionalism when civil war as a political incident is absent from the game?);
    b) this adds a middle or later ages religion. Most of the other options would have to appear in the ancient era, which is already jam-packed with religions;
    c) it's an interesting and, for the current era, distinctly important faith.

    The question is, where to put the development of Sikhism? Because of the tendency of its members to become involved in armies (cf. colonial India), I'd almost tie it to the Nationalism tech.

    Actually 7 is enough. Already Islam appears too late in the game to really make an impact and so adding further religions would lesson the impact of particular religions still further.

    AS regarding most of the pagan religions, are they not covered with the mysticim and polytheism technologies and the creation of stonehenge and obelisks?

    There is no need to include religions that never had an organised religious tradition anyhow.

    Zoroastrianism, I would be fine with. Voodoo, bug no-no. Not many people know what Voodoo is and it is not most widespread. Christianity is on every continent. Voodoo is on 2 or 3.

    If you put in Protestantism, then you have to put in other forms of every religion because people will complain. Besides, Catholicism and Protestantism isn't that different, it's just the governing of the Church and the mass, which both aren't represented in the game.

    Mormanism isn't part of Christianity. No matter what Mormons say, they're no t Christians. No Christian should believe they become a god of a planet when they die.

    Rastafari shouldn't be in because it's a sect of Christianity, same with Shi'a, Manicheism, or Sikhism.

    I'd keep the number of religions at seven, but replace Judaism with Zoroastrianism. According to many scholars, Zoroastrianism has had a profound impact on Judaism, to such a degree that one might provocatively declare the latter a localized version of the former. Zoroastrianism being the 'real' source of many of the common ideas of the so-called Abrahamic religions, it is more deserving of in-game world religion status, in my opinion.

    If we were to follow your reasoning consistently we have to go further back and civ 4 will only have 1 religion, namely the nameless one the first humans in Africa will have had.

    I understand your point, but Judaism doesn't have many adherents compared to other included religions, so it was chosen for it's perceived influence as well. However, if Judaism is simply a local Zoroastrian sect, then including Judaism instead of Zoroastrianism makes as much sense as including Protestantism instead of Christianity.

    A lot of assumptions in the above though, and I will be just as happy (almost) to see Zoroastrianism included as the eigth religion.

    Judaism is not a sect....how related is the religion to Zoroastrianism?

    Judaism has no dualism...it did not originate in Persia...there is no records of a sect breakoff...and probably their stories and prayers are all different.

    While i doubt Zoroastrianism is a sect of Judaism, I believe they were created seperately, or influenced by an even earlier religion.

    More then likely the first.

    Isn't Christianity then also "simply" a sect of Judaism?

    How linked Zoroastrianism and Judaism depends on who you believe and what ancient manuscripts you choose to ignore.

    The Torah states that Abraham believed in one God -> Monotheism. This believe in one God persisted throughout the Hebrew's slavery, conquering of modern-day Israel, the Kingdom of Israel, and beyond.

    Many modern day professors state that Monotheism was a result of Polythesim and came later (Such as in the tech tree). This means that Abraham could not have believed in one God. They say that the first king of Israel (David) would not have even been monotheistic based on the time he lived.

    They say that the Monothestic beliefs came from Persia via Zoroastrianism and the belief of One God in Judaism stems from contact with Persia.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    And back on topic: I would vote for a druidic type of religion. Worship of nature and natural happenings. This would encompass many different religions including what most of the Native American's practiced.

    Yep - Odin is missing ( in the game and in this poll )

    When it comes to the number of religions - I guess 7 is a good number as long as religion is implemented the way it is now. But IMO it would be a good idea if it would be able to wipe out ( rival ) religions ( with inquesitors for example, forced conversions etc. ) - that would bring a new dynamic to the game - maybe a new victory condition ( wipe out all rival religions ;) - or wipe out all religions => atheist victory :p ). In this case there could be more then 7 I guess

    There should be incentive to wipe out rival religions, (they spy on you, that is one thing I can immidiately think of), and also incentive to keep multiple religions, and so a player can choose to persecute whichever religion he wants, according to his play style.
