Light a match...

An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Monday morning after a passenger lit a match to disguise the scent of flatulence, authorities said.

Okay, I'm still laughing from reading this, but what I'm actually more interested in discussiong, though, is the first sentence in the article; "- It is considered polite to light a match after passing gas. "

I have never, ever heard that in my entire life. Yahoos in high school used to try to light 'em for kicks, but that's about it. Has anyone ever heard of that before, or actually done it?

Yeah this is kind of off the wall. Why not just ask the person to put it out first?

And yah thats funny the reason why she lit a match.

It would be the perfect sequel: Flatulence on a Plane!

I think she should have been allowed to go back to the flight...

I didn't know lighting a match actually did anything...I figured it was to cover up the sulfur-methane smell with the burning phosphorus match smell.

Which is a better smell, granted.

It's sometimes considered polite to light a match in a bathroom after you make a stinky there. It's most important if you're a guest, or have guests over.

Why oh why did she not use perfume, or spices, or... I mean I can think of a lot of things that are better to hide odors on a plane than matches.

I keep a can of floral air freshener behind every toilet for just such purposes. I don't actually tell guests to use them, but most seem to recognize the reason for it being there.

I posted this in Turner's News of the weird. Does that matter?

Oops, sorry. THough, I wasn't really so much interested in discussing the airplane being forced to land as I was the concept of lighting a match to cover smelly toots.

Yeah, that was a common saying when I was a kid growing up in rural Arkansas. Also, I had a friend once burn all the hair off his ass by lighting a fart. Methane = big blue flame.

Well, that would just confuse and endanger us folk who have a match-lighting policy, no?

I don't know if a 'floral flamethrower' would get rid of the stink, but it would sure liven up a bathroom experience.

Methane is an a greenhouse gas contributing to global warming,
so it is of course your environmental duty to destroy it.

CH4 + 2 O2 = C02 + 2 H2O

Best to do this at exit point before it is dispersed.

I have, and the Myth that using a lighted match to burn off the methane and other fart gases does not work. All it does is mask the smell with the smell of smoke. See Mythbusters for the confirmation of their proofs.

Well, I don't know about the smell part, but I can guarantee you from personal observation of idiot high school friends that farts do indeed flame when exposed to fire.
