Mountain Coasts? Which option is that? What's special about it, besides all coastal spaces (or most of them?) being blocked from what it sounds like?
I didn't include all the map options because there were so many. I concentrated on what I thought were the most representative or commonly used. Erebus seems to be ahead of the pack so far (for good reasons).
It is a custom mapscript you can find in the scenario and map section of the forum. It is similar to Erebus in that the land is split into diferrent areas, but not as dramatically.
Fractal on a toroidal world. I've had some really fun maps using this mode. I also enjoy the unpredictable nature. With continents, I always knew there would be another one or two out there.
Second favorite would be tectonics. Depending on the water percentage, you can make a rather challenging world to play on. Only problem with that one is the terrain tends to homogenize.
That's another thing I like about fractal. The terrain types get interspersed much better so you rarely have the problem of huge areas composed of nothing but plain. Certainly accurate to how the world actually works to have such areas, but I prefer my worlds more viable and diverse.
I am currently in my 4th civ in a "high to low" flexible difficulty (been deity a while now) 9 civ game and I must say that the option is brilliant. I usually quit when my civ is dominating in GPP, production tech and military because I see no appeal in chasing a faraway victory condition when it's clear I've won. H2L is perfect for it, I get to try a lot of different civs in a single game, and then having to destroy what I created just 50 turns ago. The best thing was that the two switches happened to two civs I didn't encounter before, so I was going about my bussiness, finishing a tech and suddenly WHAM, I'm at the opposite corner of the world with two injured scouts and one lousy city.
I like High to low, although you need to realize that you won't always finish these. Yesterday I stated as Elohim with four gold and four flood plains in my city radius. Later switched to Malakim about to be crushed by Calabim. Oh well.
