noble - no barbs - great plains - quick - 7 civs

the year is 1755 ad and ive conquered 2 civs and have one vassal. but now ive made peace and my economy is horrible. like -85 gold per turn units are on strike. can anyone tell me what i should do to get it back on track? especially since shaka is my top rival. i tried building courthouses and that didnt seem to do anything. is it too late for me?

this is the best ive ever done hopefully i will be able to recover and get my first win on noble. :D

what civics are you running?

and do you really need that many units? seem to have an awful lot that you probably don't need

do you have a tech lead? in which case the easiest thing to do would be to sell off some of your techs to the highest bidder

also in each of your cities try and make sure they are using commerce tiles like cottages instead of production

have you build grocers and markets where you can? turn any specialists you have into merchants if you can

furthermore - you may be able to liberate some of your least productive cities and pass them on to your vassals (make sure they don't get too powerful to releease themselves if they capitulated)

my civics are rep, bur, caste, decententralization, and pagnism

yeah i think shaka is going to attack me soon.

yes i have the tech lead

i will do that. i just had it on default for science.

all my specialists are scientist. nope no markets or grocers.

i dont know if i should do that with shaka planning an attack.

I would change all your scientists to merchants (because you are in rep they will still give you beakers). Then you should get some markets and grocers up asap. If you haven't already, build the forbidden palace and Versailles. I agree with selling of old techs (and for that matter, unused resources).

1. Hold down ALT and click the number 8 under Pasargadae (this selects all cities).
2. Turn OFF emphasize research.
3. Turn ON emphasize commerce.
4. Build Wealth.

This should give +88 :gold:.

I have never seen the Great Library being built in the 18th Century. Why would you even bother building it now?

With such a low pop capital, there's no point running bureacracy.

If I were you, I would disband the low-end units (e.g axemen and immortals). Temporarily switch some of the cities to build wealth. Once you discover nationalism, switch from bureacracy to it. This will save you a lot of civic upkeep, and you can go draft-happy for muskets. At the mean time continue to build courthouses and markets. If you haven't build the Forbidden palace, build one in the south.

With Great Pyramid and running representation, maybe you should have a bit more farms to support more specialists?

You have a vassal (I guess it's Kublai Khan), and he seems not too behind, then direct him to research for you (use the dip screen to tell him to go a research path different from yours).

Beeline communism and biology.

i dont know. im very disorganized. i started out good though by destroying 2 civs with a little rush. that gave me land and i pretty much just built all military to try and win by conquest/domination.

i just got bts 2 days ago. why wouldnt my vassal give me all of his techs when i demanded them. arent they practically supposed to be slaves.

Hey Jake,
Don't get down on yourself. You did good. As I see it, you're in the "driver's seat" right now. Your teching way ahead of everyone else (except Willem). You clearly have the most advanced military. You got tons of recources.
Now that you stopped the bleeding of your economy, you can focus on carrying out the rest of your domination plan. I would start cleaning up your squares (with workers), i.e. take advantage of all your untapped resources.

You're getting really close to Cuiriassers, Cavalry and Cannons. Teching won't matter after that, because you'll probably win a domination victory with Cannons and Cavalry. Watch out for Willem. I think he's a bigger problem for you then Shaka. If Shaka attacks you, you'll just get more great generals (with all those musketmen of yours). Willem on the other hand will probably have the same type of units you do. But his empire is much smaller and if he's friendly, it's probably best to keep it that way.

No vassals won't just give you their techs. But if you go to war, so do they. If you make peace, so do they. And thanks to the new patch, they won't poison your water any more.
good luck

send us an update once you think your economy is back on track :)

ok here is an update

i have calvary and riflemen but im disorganized.

i wanted to wait until i get infantry to attack.

is it just me or is Shaka devouring Willem?!? :eek: Help Willem (who is now much weaker and not a threat to win) to destroy Shaka. If needed (likely will be since Shaka always has a massive army), wait for Shaka to attack you first and kill off his units with CG riflemen and then launch a massive counterattack with cavalry and cannons.

I can't open the save but here are a few thoughts :
- your cities are small
- you have unhappiness everywhere
- you have played a militaristic game up to there, and I see no reason to go back into peace mode. Your units are costing you a great deal, and if you do nothing with them it's totally useless.

You need to get more happiness resources. I'm pretty sure your vassal has a few to offer. If he doesn't you certainly can trade for a few with your neighbours you don't plan to attack immediately.

I would do one of those 2 things :
1) - go back into military mode, attack shaka straight away. Don't be shy on losing units.
2) - switch to HR and use all your units to keep your cities happy + cottage spam all over the place and run for space.

i was starting to get on a roll with research only taking 2-3 turns for each tech. then out oof nowhere shaka won a diplomatic victory :sad:
but it was the closest ive ever come at least.

oh ouch that's a bummmer

I had one game when I was 5 turns away from a space race victory on Emperor and then Ghandi won a cultural victory

a CULTURAL victory?!?! I'd never had the AI do that before :(

oh well, you live you learn - next time you'll be much better and keeping your economy going

do another bash and then post on here when things are reasonably well developed if you need help :)

I've had a shots at taking on Jake's empire from 1755

I managed to right the economy by building wealth or courthouses and switching to cottage spam - also deleted a few axemen - back in positive bank balance in two turns

however Shaka won (as jake said he would) a diplomatic victory using the AP. However that can be stopped by building a hindu monastry and spreading hinduism to a few cities. That tips the balance just enough

not sure if I'm ready for another beating yet - but convinced its winnable

* build courthouses
* build wealth
* revolution with nationhood - select hereditary and nationhood
* spam cottages
* spam irrigation
* build monastry and spread hinduism
* trade with dutch
* build walls and castles
* build stables and barracks in one or two cities - pikemen, curraiser, cavalry (replace green musketeers with experienced troops from barracks with instructor)

This time I'll befriend the dutch from the outset cos as soon as willhiem capitulates shaka has half the map and its just a matter of time until he brings a stack of 20 riflemen and 10 knights each with combat III. Thats a hard army to stop

It would really help if you controlled the unhappiness in your cities. Hereditary Rule, happiness resources and multiplying buildings like markets, forges and theatres.

Before long wars, and the more so the later the game, you need one of the following for war weariness:

Either Police State + Jails + Mt. Rushmore

Or Theatres and Colosseums in all your big cities. When you get unhappy, raise the culture slider. With theatres and colosseums, each 20% on the culture slider gets you 5 happy faces in a city. Best if also used with jails and Mt. Rushmore. Keep your cities from starving and shrinking. An unhappy here or there is ok, but lots of unhappies are really bad. Often increasing the culture slider will actually increase gold and research.

Think of it this way ... suppose all your cities are size 15 with theatres and colosseum and have 5 angry citizens from war weariness. Raise the culture slider 20% and now you have 15 tiles worked instead of 10. 50% more tiles worked at the cost of 20% of your commerce. Good trade. Plus you get all the extra production and your cities don't starve.

yes, good analysis about the culture slider there - I keep forgetting to use it!

if you are desperate for military units you can also do one or both of the following:

if you are spiritual you can switch to slavery quickly and chop rush a few extra military units.

OR if you have nationhood you can draft some military units in

better than having unhappy citizens doing nothing! the extra military units may help you get the war over quicker! solving your unhappiness problem ;)

last shot at this one

after I false start I decided to use the bulk of ther troops to prevent the dutch capitulating because that made shaka invincible. as jake has a tech lead those muskets are pretty deadly

anyway shaka soon faltered and his power graph plummeted

by which time I had buildt up my economy and some cats - and invaded him myself

its a great strategy for getting inexperienced troops some exp

I will try it in another game.
