I like Epic speed the most, but it's not perfect either. I'd rather have a new game speed of 950-1100 turns. Marathon is the second best, I think. Some times I play cultural victory games with Quick speed.

I tried epic and was bored to see such a high number for the tech research and quit.

For my main play, I use Marathon with several elements tweaked to perform better for my enjoyment.... generally, the cost of buildings and troops are lowered fractionally while tech cost is fractionally increased.

I wish I could get my head around modifying the years setting to make the game a little longer and then rebalance it again.

Other times, I'll play normal just to enjoy a game in one day.

Used to play only Marathon but I tried Quick on a lark and I like it much better. I hated the long stretches in Marathon where I'd only be mashing on Return to end yet another uneventful turn. I did like that units were useful longer in Marathon, but it took so long to build them it hardly felt worth it (losing guys in a city attack on Marathon is so painful.)

I would like some kind of option to change speeds of different aspects - I'd love it if I could have Normal research with Quick on everything else. Rise of Nations had an adjustable configuration like this, which was great - you could enjoy your favorite tech period for longer, and actually be able to pump out lots of units and engage in big wars much more easily!

    Epic.
Marathon is too slow in the begining when you're just researching worker techs,
Now with the advanced starts option I might give it another try, but not before spy missions and inflation are fixed.

I just play normal speed. Games already take about 10 hours to finish as it is, if I would play epic or marathon, I never finish one. :D

I like most of them, but I play on Epic most of all.

What I'd like to see is some option that can either:

extend the amount of turns in the game
    make techs cost more

Since it would extend the lifespan of all of the units without me having to wait so darn long to build up an army.

Ive only ever played it on Marathon! :)

I like the game to take as long as possible, I hate getting new technology too quick and not getting a chance to use units etc....So I wont ever be playing anything except Marathon, dont see the point

Agree completely! I want my Civ game to be a long, slow arduos process from stone age to space age. Too bad, Firaxis seems to neglect game testing in Marathon.

Where and how do you increase tech costs?

Be specific please--I am an XML idiot :)

Same here. I only play Marathon--having tried all settings when I originally got the game.

I'm afraid that I am no expert, but reading XML isn't much different than reading English :D

Your best bet is to make a new folder in your Mods folder to make any changes, then you can just load your specifically modified one rather than making haphazard changes to the default game XML..... inside you can imitate the structure of the default assets folder....

    Something like:

    \Civ4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\{your new folder name}\Assets\XML\GameInfo

Then make a copy of the GameSpeedInfo.xml from the BtS assets into the above folder and modify that.....

    Check out the lines....

    Code:
    			<Type>GAMESPEED_MARATHON</Type>
    			<Description>TXT_KEY_GAMESPEED_MARATHON</Description>
    			<Help>TXT_KEY_GAMESPEED_MARATHON_HELP</Help>
    			<iGrowthPercent>300</iGrowthPercent>
    			<iTrainPercent>200</iTrainPercent>
    			<iConstructPercent>300</iConstructPercent>
    			<iCreatePercent>300</iCreatePercent>
    			<iResearchPercent>300</iResearchPercent>
    			<iBuildPercent>300</iBuildPercent>
    			<iImprovementPercent>300</iImprovementPercent>
    			<iGreatPeoplePercent>300</iGreatPeoplePercent>
    			<iCulturePercent>300</iCulturePercent>
    			<iAnarchyPercent>200</iAnarchyPercent>
    			<iBarbPercent>400</iBarbPercent>
    			<iFeatureProductionPercent>300</iFeatureProductionPercent>
    			<iUnitDiscoverPercent>300</iUnitDiscoverPercent>
    			<iUnitHurryPercent>300</iUnitHurryPercent>
    			<iUnitTradePercent>300</iUnitTradePercent>
    			<iUnitGreatWorkPercent>300</iUnitGreatWorkPercent>
    			<iGoldenAgePercent>200</iGoldenAgePercent>
    			<iHurryPercent>33</iHurryPercent>
    			<iHurryConscriptAngerPercent>300</iHurryConscriptAngerPercent>
    			<iInflationPercent>15</iInflationPercent>
    			<iInflationOffset>-200</iInflationOffset>
    			<iVictoryDelayPercent>300</iVictoryDelayPercent>

Compare the numbers to Epic and Normal and see where you want to go.... you'll have to play around a bit with it until you feel it's right.

If that's not specific enough for you, you'll have to ask someone else - as I said, I'm barely familiar with it myself, I just tinker until I get the effect I want..... which is why you *must* make your own mod folder rather than modifying the core game files.

    Good luck. ;)

i wish there was a mode when you built units/buildings and workers on tile improvements at the speed in a normal game, but the reseaching for tech is as long as an marathon game!

In Warlords, I played exclusively Epic. In BtS, I'm gravitating back towards Normal. The added 60 turns and new techs for Normal seem to have corrected the problem that units obsolete too quickly.

In my first games of BtS on Epic, the later game just dragged on too long IMO.

I play Epic but I find the age of sail period goes way to fast considering the importance of the time. You hardly get much chance to use privateers.

Marathon because you get time to really sample all the units from the various epoc's, without them all going obsolete half way through a large war
