I have just gone from Warlord to Nobel level and am struggling.

Can you please help me with defining a strategy for this game? I have restarted with the same map and am really struggling to get into a dominat position:

- continents map
- epic speed
- I am Elizabeth/English
- On my contient are Hatshepsut & Tokugawa
- Other continent is Asoka/Cyrus/Mao Zedong/Montezuma
- I am on the south part of a continent and have access to copper/horses/iron. There is a thin land bridge between the north and south parts of the continent that I can easily dominate.

So far I have:
- played it gently, then around 1900 the entire world declare war on me almost simultaeuously. Hmmm.
- killed Tokugawa in the early game, but then fell behind rivals in technology. I was struggling to catchup, then the wars started from Montezuma.

Thanks. G

I suspect your early game (1st 100 turns or so) needs improvement. 95% of the time the proper first build is a Worker. Improve food first. Don’t try to found an early religion. Most buildings are situational to worthless. Exceptions are granary (any city that’s going to grow) and a few libraries. Settle with food in first ring (unless creative; then food in second ring is ok.) Don’t be afraid to use the whip. Expand; first settler started at size 3 or 4.

When do I start a war?

Or do I wait for the wars to come to me?

Or perhaps, I am missing something and should not be overly worried about wars.

I have only recently picked up Civ4. I mainly played Civ 1 and 2 about 25 years ago…

On noble should be easily be able to out expand the AI in early game. Aim for 4-5 cities and go for construction. Practice early wars with catapults + axemen (don't even need swordsmen, maybe throw a few cheap archers to finish off cities). Then you have 8-9 cities at least and a captured AI capital city. From there you are already in a dominant position.

I got way better by reading various threads in strategy and tips. Shadow games and strategy articles are both great. Succession games in stories and tales that have multiple experianced players working together are also a good way to learn more about the game.

I was terrible at CIV IV until I learned from watching others play on YouTube. Now I can typically win on Immortal difficulty. There are even better players around nowadays. Go to YouTube and look at the channel Sullla and check out his playthroughs on Immortal and Deity.

Henrik is also a very good CIV IV player on YouTube. He also posts here from time to time. I learned a lot of innovative war strats from Henrik.
