In the timeline section, there are entries relating to other civs signing pacts to contain your aggression. I have never seen these in a game. When do these happen? Do i have some version that does not include them?

When you get too strong they tend to do it. But I always get a message.

Btw, what "timeline section" are you talking about?

Hey

Dont pay attention to those shity bastards that team up against you. If they do, know that you're strong enough to kick them back to Palookaville...
These pacts can also be useful:
1) if the Great Library isnt obsolete, and you have it, usually when civ1 gets and advance, they share it with their ally civ2, and thus YOU aquire it.
2) same after Great Library - if civ1 has the tech, usually civ2 will as well, so you can to steal it from which ever one is closer to you.
3) if you wanna pick a fight with civ1, but the senate get screwfull and says no way, just pick a fight with civ2, and civ1 will have to join in the fun.

Be warned, however: a war on two fronts has never been a good outcome for anyone anywhere.

Aggression pacts are simply another way of saying "We are signing an alliance against you because we think that you're too strong and are going to kick our @ss". Usually, it doesn't mean anything. I'm always at war with the world anyways. It's not like they're going to launch a cooperative amphibeous invasion just because they got happy and allied.

And if you're not in republic/democracy, and have an unexpired great wall, you can, if you want, force a treaty on all of the civs.

If you start seeing these pacts it means you are doing very well

don't worry. The ai can't fight worth a hill of beans let alone co-ordinate a large scale attack. They are more "pesky" than anything else.

But when you attack one,or even defend against attack, they will invoke the pact and the members will declare war on you.Thats ok as now you get to destroy their "pesky" units also.Like that explorer thats been hanging around tying up that road for last 10 turns..or that boat that keeps dropping off diplomats for you to expel

I guess my skill level just hasn't progreesed far enough yet. The best score i could manage was 150% on Cheiftain level, and the best i've gotten on Prince (the highest level ive dared play) was 47&.

those scores arn't bad.

i've had horrible scores and had them sign pacts against me.

it's about how many cities/how technologically advanced you are, i think.

It's all about how well you're doing in the powergraph, aka population.

If you're first, you get picked on. If you're last, you get picked on. If you're in the middle, you get picked on by the ones better than you and nothing from the ones lower than you.

Tell me about it - I hate the things. There I'll be being the most isolationist Civ in the game and all these people start ganging up and making me nervous.

I don't even have to ever gone to war with anyone - I'm still "agressive" apparenly...

I have noticed that they seem to happen more if A) you are strongest in military force B) have had your settlers expanding rapidly C) have been kicking the crap out of either 2nd 3rd or 4th highest military power and finally D) the two that sign the alliance are the two closest neighbors you have. Just what I have noticed definetly not set in stone.

I said, it all has to do one POPULATION AND TECHS!

But more on population though, and a bit on money. If you want exact figures, go to the war academy and check Andu Indorins Powergraph explanation.

Generally, if you have the most people. you'll the highest in the powergraph. That's when the magic happens.

For some reason im inclined to think that the pacts have a direct relationship to how much territory is yours. Say if you are going really well, like you have like 25 cities, and there are like 5 other civs around you, and your #1 in science, but not military, the two civs you have had the most contact with will sign an agression pact with eachother, that is ofcourse if you dont get to them first.

I agree with Cedric Greene.

The pacts are AI alliances being signed. If you attack a civ that is allied, it's allies will declare war. This does not happen at the easiest difficulty level, but on all other difficulty levels.

Whenever non-military units start getting in the way in my territory (units that you cannot request removal through negotiation), and I would start a war by attacking them, I send in the diplomats/spies and bribe them to my side. Its amazing how that usually ends such annoyance in the future.

Then I'm doing very well, too! In one of my games I declared war on the Egyptians and whoops! Suddenly the Egyptians activated their alliances with the rest of the world! I eventually managed to conquer the Egyptians (and the rest, I was playing on Warlord), but that was actually quite fun!

Agression pacts are basically used by the AI to limit your expansion. But since the AI in civilization are incredibly stupid, they don't work. The only way the AI has been able to do anything to me is by bribing my cities, which is why I switch to democracy as soon as I stop the disorder.

I wish they improve the AI so they cooperate and actually PREPARE and LAUNCH a MAJOR INVASION, instead of landing a couple pesky units to pillage your city squares.

maybe i a have a wierd version or something, but the AI seems to not make some of the errors you guys have listed.
