What to do if I start 'alone'...?

if it is a big continent, it will be fantastic!!!

Build settelers like crazy man, occupy the whole continent. at the meantime, research mapmaking ASAP.

if it is a small island, man, restart the game heheh... especially when you are surounded by sea squares, in that case, you cant get out until you have "navigation" that is like a billion years of research for ya if you have only 2 cities in an island.

I have trouble managing to win when starting on an island as well. I find once i finally get off of it i am terribly far behind in tech and cant buy them off the AI... plus, the AI will usually have built the Great Library before me so there never is much chance of getting that done :( I`ll just have to practise more playing on them.

DaveMcW has the right idea. Pre-build for the Great Library. If you want to stay competitive in tech, you should make a beeline for literature. Start building a palace in a city near your capital when you are two maybe three techs from literature so that when you get literature you can switch the palace to Great Library and have it completed in a few turns. IMO I would only restart if I got a small island with no rivers. If you've got a smaller island but it's got a river you can maximize your research. Not to mention how quickly you can populate a small island and still have decent production/corruption ratio in all of the cities on that island. The pre-build strategy is nothing new, but no one had mentioned it yet so I thought I would.

Personally, i have never had that happen (and hope it doesn't ever happen), but it would be a nice challenge to see what would happen.

@DaveMcW: The Great Library is a must, on levels like regent and above. True you could fall behind in techs on chieftan or warlord even if you are on a small island, but the stupidity of the AI on these levels makes it almost impossible to actually stay behind.

In my current game I started on a decent sized island with only Germany as competition. Once I realized this I put an emphasis on building "some" Military with my mass settler plan. I knew that once our island was settled Germany would start looking at my cities. All this time I was focusing on getting Map Making. Once I started down the map making path, our island was mostly settled. Here is when every city I had built a barracks and started pumping out either spearmen or swordsmen. A couple turns before Map Making ticked over I went to war. My hope was that I would get a great leader so that I could rush build the Great Lighthouse making it so that I would have a MUCH better chance of expanding off my island before the middle ages.

Map making and the Great Lighthouse will be key.
Literature and the Great Library will really help if you really are stuck on your island.

Good luck, in my game England got the Great Lighthouse and was able to discover two other continents full of other Civs to "interact with" :)

I made a scenerio once, just to see what would happen, that was on a tiny map and all of the players had just one tile on the whole map (8 bonus grassland tiles and the rest water, with 8 players). :crazyeye: This was a mistake, after building The Great Library, The Oracle, and The Pyraimids, the game was over-year 2050.

It was also quite boring because of the turns; space bar, space bar, space bar, etc... The only way to win is if you were the Vikings with the Berserk.

When I am stuck on an Island I send out galleys before I get navigation or the lighthouse.
In my last game like this 3 sunk but the 4th discovered a large island with 2 other civs making it worthwhile.

Like the others have said, priorities are to establish contact with other civs as soon as possible. Also the GL, for use after contact has been made.

So literature and mapmaking. ;) I'd also populate/develop my island as soon as possible.

once I was in a big continent with the english only they never constructed thier third city :mwaha:

its a great beginning, dont waste it.the tips in this thread really works, I have used them.

If you find yourself on a continent by yourself keep in mind your choke points and make sure that if in fact you are connected by a narrow land bridge then the AI civs won't be able to develop on your land until the build galleys and extra settlers. And then they have to spend the time sailing around looking for a place to land.

I always try to monopolize the coastline first and then work inwards. That way if the AI does land a galley right off and starts trekking inland I can always build up my culture in the surrounding cities and hope for a flip.

OR, in some cases I'll simply give them annoyance by constantly pillaging all roads leading from their city to mine. I hate leeches.

Build great library and lighthouse and find enough other civs asap I'd say. This way you'll get an advantage from the library.

Next step: Once you've located other civs, trade maps, scout their iron, load a ship with units, visit them and disconnect/block their iron. If they regain it, disconnect and block it again. Sooner or later it's your knights against their spearmen/longbowmen. In the meantime you can build a nice empire on your home continent, AI attack forces w/o iron supply are a calculable risk. And always keep ships near your own invading forces, to be able to evacuate a GL and ship him home in case you get one. ;)
