What TV Shows are you watching? ι', a perfect I.

Well, I'm a huge fan of Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece; got the 4K UHD release this summer. Unfortunately I just don't find ALIEN: Earth scary at all; it's more action schlock in the vein of ALIENS or the AvP and Predator films. Scott's film is the ultimate Lovecraftian cosmic horror film; that xenomorph is terrifying, shot extremely well and deliberately kept in the shadows and out of frame. The tension created is unbelievable.

I just think it's a shame that Hawley doesn't aim for that atmosphere. I love his first season of Fargo; never thought it possible to make a series format of the Coen Brothers film that does it justice - but he did it.

The tension created is unbelievable.

Kinda what Ebert said in his Alien re-review -

One of the great strengths of “Alien” is its pacing. It takes its time. It waits. It allows silences (the majestic opening shots are underscored by Jerry Goldsmith with scarcely audible, far-off metallic chatterings).
A recent version of this story would have hurtled toward the part where the alien jumps on the crew members.

Appears the new A:E epis arrive on Tuesday, so I caught episode 3 last night. Really enjoyed it. Most of the action in this epi occurred up front as it gradually moved scenery back to the island, where some very interesting things happened. Most especially the dissection toward the end that I think most fans will find intriguing.

A:E is not a space horror like its predecessors. It has some of the elements found in the movies. The show seems more straight science fiction with more of a focus on corporations, research, competition, and, ofc, humanity. "When is a machine not a machine?". IMO, the creators have developed a fascinating world here.

And for the night's closing credits, we get "Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica.

Delving into all that stuff is welcome, they gotta balance it with the chills and scares that is the heart of the franchise.

Now we know! Different cannon to what's shown, suggested or hinted at before.
Get out the flame-throwers...burn it, kill it!

And for the night's closing credits, we get "Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica.

I am enjoying the mystery needle drops at the end credits, a lil something extra to look forward too.

The Queen's Gambit is really good. I'm 4 eps in, 3 more to go.

I can't think of one complaint about this show so far.

I have also been enjoying Alien Earth. I love that they figured out a solid way to give us those original Alien movie horror vibes. There's interesting stuff happening with the various types of characters, the story is pretty good, the only thing I didn't really like was the spaceship crash looking kind of suspect. I mean, if we're going by Kerbal Space Program parameters here, that ship should have blown up in the atmosphere. It was even firing its engines. It should have been going crazy fast. If it didn't burn up in the atmoshpere it should have smashed into those skyscrapers so fast that we should have seen a huge mushroom cloud.. or something at least resulting in a giant crater. The way it actually unfolded on screen seemed really "video game"-y. Which actually I don't mind at all in hindsight, thinking of that scene in video game terms made me think "yeah alright", it set up a cool way for them to do the show, so I'll forgive the "issue". I mean, it seems like it would have been easy to make that a lot more realistic, but I'm over it. I also at first I didn't like the billionaire young adult or whatever his face is, but now he seems kind of perfect. Annoying but I mean of course he needs to be this kind of annoying, the actor is playing that part well.

Next episode seems to show us a flashback to what went down on The Maginot, before its crew perished.
Maybe we'll actually get a bit of horror for a change. :)

I hope they surprise us with a comical musical episode

(I don't, but at the same time I'm here for it if it happens)

I am glad you are rectifying this great oversight on your part, warp, especially with how much I talked about it years ago. ;) Fantastic show all the way through, with a satisfying and heartfelt ending. ATJ is a wonder!

OH...and yup I am enjoying A:E very much, though I have not had a chance to catch the recent epi. IMO there is plenty to enjoy and think about with this show, other than horror elements.

Oh..the crash...keep in mind that Mother was still controlling the ship as it crashed

Interesting...just caught the news that Amazon is making Bladerunner 99 scheduled to release in 2026. Stars include Tom Burke and Michelle Yeoh. Set 50 years after the last movie "...2049". Glad to see the CB Strike star getting a big role. They shoulda nabbed the lovely Holiday Grainger for this too.

Sounds like I should have been paying more attention to your earlier recommendations ;) re: Queen's Gambit

As per the crash, what looked wrong to me is that the ships engines were continually pushing the ship forward, all the way from orbit up until it actually crashed. so when it crashed into the ground it should have been moving crazy fast, leading to a crazy mushroom cloud

Latest ep 5 is flash-backing to what led to the deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-landing.

Next Ep 6 -

Tensions rise as powerful enemies confront each other, a dangerous plan unfolds, and curiosity leads to deadly consequences

Hostage on Netflix is a superb British thriller. Limited series. and as a bonus it includes Julie Delpy in a leading role!!

Almost all the crew interiors of The Maginot were located in the nose of the ship, just like The Nostromo. Yet those crew interiors hardly took any internal damage, as demonstrated when people wander around in them after the crash.

Compare that to what happens to the Prometheus when it collides with the engineer ship in Prometheus - its nose crumbles at impact and the entire ship blows apart.

It's just stupid, but if it wasn't stupid - then there would be no story to tell after episode 1. :)

oh wow... The Pitt won. I can't remember if I mentioned it here before, but I did catch that on HBO. Very good fast-paced medical drama - basically in real-time. First thing I've seen Wyle in, in ages. Katherine LaNasa was great in it - glad she won. I was not familiar with her much as an actress - just vaguely - but she was a standout for sure.

Happy for Merrit Weaver too. She is an outstanding actress. (If you have not seen Unbelievable, I highly recommend even with the dark subject matter)

Oh..and Adolescence was a gimme. I'm sure most knew that would win.

''Trouble is brewing'' -

A big, well-dressed drama about the Guinness family might sound like a potentially cosy watch, but Downton Abbey this isn't. The eight-parter for Netflix from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) opens on the day of the funeral of brewing titan Benjamin and, from the moment you see James Norton's factory foreman character, Sean Rafferty, striding down the streets of Dublin smashing people's heads in to the strains of Kneecap's Get Your Brits Out, you know this isn't another genteel costume drama. After all, if life for the family is like this on the day of a funeral, what will it be like on a regular week?

There's a jolt of Succession to the set-up, given its focus on Guinness's four heirs – Edward (Enola Holmes' Louis Partridge), Arthur (Shardlake's Anthony Boyle), Anne (Emily Fairn) and Ben (Fionn O'Shea) – and what they do next, but Knight's series is very much its own creature right from the start. Rounding out the impressive cast are Dervla Kirwan as Aunt Agnes and the always entertaining Jack Gleeson (Game Of Thrones). (Eight episodes)

The Blacklist- on NETFLIX.

Excellent *chefs kiss* no notes.

I’m up to Season 1 episode 14 so far and thoroughly enjoying.

It’s about an international Super/Arch Criminal who decides to (semi) “retire”, in order to turn FBI confidential informant, as backdoor a means of essentially “adopting” (personally and professionally) a rookie FBI agent, as a sort of surrogate daughter, for party obvious, partly mysterious reasons.

James Spader is absolutely masterful as the lead character, the criminal mastermind, Raymond “Red” Reddington.

James Spader was fabulous as a snotty teen in Pretty in Pink in 1986 and everything thereafter, especially in Boston Legal.
