What TV Shows are you watching? ι', a perfect I.

Ragnorak on Netflix is surprisingly good. The show built nicely in S1 and I am in S2 of 3 atm.

The show's finale is... not great. You should see it, if only to complete it, but you might find the second last episode to be a better end than the real one.

But it's a really charming show overall. I loved Saxa.

That's what I've been readin' in the imdb user reviews basically all "great until the ending".

HBO trying to handle the fallout:

They say ‘continue’ to enjoy the show, but I'd have to be enjoying it already to be able to continue enjoying it. :scan:

Clearly this is aimed at the less-discerning public.

I started episode 4 of Lady in the Lake (2024, Apple TV+) last night, but I was so [goshdarned] tired that I just flat-out missed huge chunks of it. I had to shut it off halfway through. Next time I get back to it, I'm just going to restart the episode from the beginning. Is it possible to be so brain-dead you can't even follow a television show? Apparently.

I mentioned one of the songs from this show already, over in the music thread, but I just want to note here that the soundtrack for this show is outstanding. And it's not just that she picked good songs, they're woven into the show brilliantly. Sometimes they're diegetic, sometimes not, sometimes they go back and forth. If you're any kind of fan of '60s soul and jazz, you might want to look up this soundtrack, even if you don't watch the show. Just the first couple eps, for example, feature songs by Sly & The Family Stone, Joe Tex, The Soulsations, The O'Jays, and Willie Bobo, and there are in-scene performances of songs by The Supremes and Nina Simone that are pretty good (one of the repeat locations of the series is a nightclub, so we see live performances going on there - these songs are performed by singers covering the songs, not women portraying Nina Simone and The Supremes, but yeah, they're not bad).

You should watch the show too, not just listen to the soundtrack. It's good. I'm just sayin', the soundtrack kicks [buttocks].

Kaos on Netflix is a frolicking, no-holds-barred take on Greek mythology. Zeus is having a bad day! The story is set in modern Greece. Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus.
Interestingly, they have taken the Bridgerton approach to casting.

About to finish ST TOS season 1 rewatch with "Operation: Annihilate!". This is the "attack of the flying electric pancakes" episode. need to circle back and rewatch some episodes I slept through before I can count season 1 properly re-watched.

Part of mythology is how the sage Teiresias (basically an oracle, like Kalhas, who appears in many Greek myths) was metamorphosed into a snake by Hera, which by one account happened because he had claimed that women enjoy sex much more than men (Teiresias previously had been metamorphosed into a woman), which line Zeus used to defend himself when Hera accused him of infidelity.

Actor who voiced Splinter in Ninja Turtles dies

Voice actor Peter Renaday, best known for his role in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, has died aged 89.
He was the voice of Master Splinter in the original popular animated show broadcast in the 1980s and 1990s.
Friend and co-star Townsend Coleman, who voiced Michealangelo in the series, announced Renaday's death on social media, commenting: "I will miss him dearly."
It's reported Renaday died at his home in Burbank, California on Sunday of suspected natural causes.

Born in Louisiana in 1935, Renaday had a hugely successful career that spanned more than six decades, playing roles in nearly 200 films and TV shows.
He voiced characters in Disney animated films in the 1970s and 1980s including The Aristocrats, The Rescuers and the Black Cauldron.
His TV credits include Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, Alvin & The Chipmunks, The Transformers, The Real Ghostbusters and Batman: The Animated Series.
He was also known for voicing the animatronic Abraham Lincoln at Walt Disney World's Hall of Presidents.
Renaday voiced Splinter in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 1987 to 1996.

Coleman, his Ninja Turtles co-star, described Renaday as a "Disney Legend" in a post on X.
The 70-year-old called Renaday "one of the most genuine, salt-of-the-earth people I have ever known" saying he had "the privilege of visiting him a month ago and he was as vibrant as ever".
Fans have also been paying tribute to him on social media. One posted: "I will always remember you for bringing Splinter to life".
Los Angeles website TMZ reported Renaday was found unresponsive after police were called to his home for a welfare check.
The 89-year-old was married to Florence "Flo" Daniel - who worked as Walt Disney Studios' music department secretary for 35 years - from 1979 until her death in 2011.
A film reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released last summer.

Goldblum is so perfect at playing Zeus and the script captures such a wide range of nuance that every scene is delightful.

Just starting up on Slow Horses S4. The plots in each season are alright, nothing special. But that doesn't matter, because this is one of those series where it is all about spending time with wonderfully realized and deeply flawed characters. In that sense, it is the complete opposite of the usual series spat out from the Marvel Studios or Lucasfilm factory.

Finished up with season 1 of the ST TOS rewatch. Debating doing season 1 of TNG or TAS, or season 2 of TOS.

The Old Man Season 2 is now out on Hulu. It'll be interesting to see where they take Bridges character now. First season did not go quite where I wanted it to despite being fantastic for much of it.

White Lines on Netflix. Spanish crime drama on Ibiza. I'm a few episodes and will keep going. Pretty good.

The Perfect Couple (Netflix)

Susanne Bier returns with a new murder mystery playing out among a small tribe of the American upper class; echoing her previous mini-series The Undoing, also starring Nicole Kidman.

This time, I feel Bier's storytelling gets lost in a blender of misdirection and character reveals. The police investigation into the murder is non-existent, because the officers get all the Information handed to them willingly, mostly from Eve Hewson's character. Bier is clearly not interested in 'solving the crime' and how that goes about; she seems entirely focused on the family secrets and the drama and tension that creates when a character decides to stir the pot with revealing something they know about the murder victim. That approach sometimes work, but your storytelling has to be razor sharp to pull it off. After everything is laid bare in the final episode, I shrugged my shoulders realizing that I didn't really care about any of these characters. They don't feel real, but like constructs that look like human beings.

To me the real horror of The Perfect Couple, is realizing how many veteran actors are subscribing to overdone facial plastic surgery. Nicole Kidman slurs some consonants when speaking her lines (she tries her best to hide it, not always successfully) and that is likely the result of countless surgeries done to her lower face impairing her speech. She's far from the only one; it breaks my heart to see Isabella Adjani partly disfigured from succumbing to the same trend; the permanently bloated facial features.

Well Kidman is 57 :)
At least her cosmetic procedures sort of look ok? (or aren't among the worst). Eventually, everyone ages...
There was a popular Byzantine phrase (still in use today here), that "her paint still passes/doesn't pass", referring to the existent then analogue of age-related make-up.
Adjani no longer exists in the Tenant or Possession era either.

Kidman and Adjani would look perfectly fine today without invasive cosmetic surgery; that's fairly easy to tell. They are also both still naturally pale skinned, which reduces wrinkles with age. Nature and genes gave both these women heart-shaped feminine jawlines and cheekbones; for some reason they were both convinced to get implants or injections anyway, giving them that permanently bloated masculine jaw akin to late actor Robert Z'Dar. I'm overexaggerating of course, but you get the idea. ;)
