Hmm, I seriously don't know what's wrong with them: I never had a problem with the controls.

It's a sandbox game with an overarching plot… haven't you run into an insufferable yet plot-central girl whose father is voiced by Tony Shalhoub before everybody recognised him from Monk?

Fallout 1 is not like a modern open world sandbox It's You only have like ~15 game locations in it other than that the world is usually empty with ocasional random encounter when You fight enemies. In between Vault 13 and 15 (in a straight line) is Shady Sands town , You should start there ;)

On my first playthrough of Fallout 1, the RNG gods were not kind to me. It took me multiple tries to get to Shady Sands.

Talking about Fallout 1 and 2 gets me nostalgic. The game is worth playing just for the dialogues and story imho =)

    inevitable nostalgic videos :

I think I met her and her dad. Neither has annoyed me yet and I'm kind of getting into the game.

If you really don't see any problems with the controls then you've got nostalgia blinders on. I figured out how most things work now and it's just deeply flawed and clunky.

In fairness to Takhisis, he plays a lot of old games or games with clunky interfaces, so perhaps he is just used to it.

Anyhow hobbs, if you are interested in a turn-based isometric RPG, I highly recommend Avernum: Escape from the Pit.

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/208400/Avernum_Escape_From_the_Pit/?snr=1_7_15__13
Avernum's great strength is the worldbuilding and world design. Anyone who defies the world-spanning empire -heretics, criminals, malcontents, rebels, or the unlucky - get thrown into the massive cave system of Avernum. Those exiled there have tried to build up a society in the face of the trials and tribulations in the caves.

If you are looking for a more party-based and "role-playing" heavy game, I recommend Avadon2: The Corruption. Avadon1: The Black Fortress, isn't Spiderweb Software's best work but Avadon2 is one of their better games.

EDIT: Also, Avernum is set up so you can play the entire game one-handed using keyboard commands. Useful feature that, if your mouse hand is covered in cheeto dust.

This is completely true. Several years ago I won Freespace 2 on maximum difficulty playing with keyboard only, and it wasn't even a specialised gaming keyboard.

Thanks for the recommendation. I decided not to buy any games for a while which is how I wound up on Fallout in the first place. I picked it up for free a long time ago on Steam and never played it. If I do end up liking Fallout, I'll look into Avernum. Not sure about Fallout though. This is my first isometric RPG, either turnbased or real-time.

Sword of Islam (one of the early CK2 DLC) is entirely during this weekend only.

The thing about Fallout is that you go out slowly, building up your skills, trying to avoid radscorpions (both because they can kill you easily at the early stages of the game and because a battle with one of them can be tiresome due to the way the game handles combat) and the suspense is supposed to build up as slowly while you begin to try and save your people, stumble upon conspiracies, do a radioactive far west gunfight or two, and eventually when you meet armies of orcs mutants with bazookas the music will get your nerves tingling. It's one of the best games I've ever bough on GoG, back in December 2013. ;)

Well good news, Avernum (and I think all the Spiderweb Software games) have demos!
    http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/avernum/avernum/index.html

Avernum is quite different in how it feels compared to Fallout1/2. Fallout 1/2 are definitely old games while Spiderweb games, have a very modern feeling interface. Plus they support pretty high resolutions so they don't have that blurry and muddy feel.

As a side note here...SMAC/SMAX is on sale for a buck and a half on GoG. Anyone with a disk version that is battling against their operating system might take advantage of that.

You should post that in the Alpha Centauri forum.

I bought it on GoG for $5 2 or 3 days ago. I can't seem to get it to work but I can get it to run alien crossfire.

That's all you need. You can run SMAX and just select the original seven factions and it is pretty much SMAC.
