As for the Mayan thing, that's a common misconception. What will actually occur is that we will reach the end of the 13th (out of 20) era or "B'ak'tun" of the Mayan Long Count. Now, the last incarnation of the world was destroyed at this point, but this incarnation- being, of course, the final and perfect one- gets a full 20 eras. The end of these eras is just like the millennium, really- some arbitrary numbers tick over and everyone says "yay".

Why not just say it doesnt break up and hits in one spot? You still get the same result, if not even more so.
