What would make a better Science city?

Alright, so I'm playing an Emperor game, and doing pretty well. I'm playing with Unrestricted Leaders/Random Personalities, and I'm PHI/ORG. I managed to grab both The Oracle and Temple of Artemis, and I just finished building the Pyramids, so I'm switching into a SE. I used Oracle to grab CoL, so I already have my gold city set. Now I'm looking at where to set up my Science.

I'm debating between Akkad and Amsterdam. Both have large amounts of commerce producing resources, and both have a good amount of food resources as well. Amsterdam is on the ocean, so it has the overseas trade route bonus going for it, but Akkad has slightly more food and more land tiles to work. Any ideas where I should start building GL after I get Literature?

Can you give a screenshot with :food::hammers::commerce: turned on and resource tags turned off (so they don't get in the way)?

Id say Amsterdam, the bonuses for internation trade over the sea are very nice!

Amsterdam-3 seafood resources will supply enough food for 2 scientist specialists plus you can still work the copper mine. Just be sure to get a trireme or galley out to defend your fishing nets since there is already a barb galley near Amsterdam. If you can get an open borders agreement with the Arabs, it would be faster to build a ship at one of your more developed cites rather than at Amsterdam.

From what I can see, Akkad does not have that much excess food. It only has the grassland Rice tile but it also has many plains tiles. Akkad would make a better production city or maybe a good Heroic Epic city to pump out units.

If you are not cultural, whip the monument at Amsterdam so you can expand your borders and quarry the marble tile that is near Amsterdam to accelerate the production of the Great Library. But you may not be able to build the GL fast enough if you just captured Amsterdam and if the city has a low population.

Yeah. I actually already had Marble, but I decided to build GL in Akkad... Mainly so I could ensure I would get it. The turn before I got Literature, HC also got it, and since he is Industrious as well I didn't want to risk it(I still didn't even have a Library in Amsterdam). However, I think I might build Oxford in Amsterdam anyway, because by the time I get enough Universities built to enable Oxford I'll probably be close to Scientific Method.

Also, Akkad has a little more food then that. There is a Cow just outside Amsterdam's radius, but within Akkad's, giving 3 :food: on that tile. In addition, it had several Wine resources, which gives +1 :food:... not much, but it helps.

But they're all plains wine, so only giving 2 food total. Not enough to support specialists.

Personally, with all those plains hill, I'd be very tempted to make Amsterdam a production mega. 3 seafood resources, and get some farms to those grasslands, and it could be a monster production city. I'd maybe think about building a city 2N, 1W of the corn, on the plains hill. Cottage the grasslands, and you can probably get fairly decent science from that city.

Even though GL is already built, I'd have to agree and go with Amsterdam being your big science city for the immediate future. You've got some ok luxuries + good food + two strategic resources. Good stuff.

Neither - Make a city in the center grasslands grabbing the corn and wine, cottage that up, and you got yourself a world class science city. Akkad is a good backup, and Amsterdam has to be the production city.
