What's it for?

If there was no fourth finger, there would be no middle finger. ( and that would be tragic)

I think it's fairly normal to be able to use your left pinky to touch one palm but not the other. But then again I'm no doctor.

I have discovered that I can move the pinky on my left hand and make it touch my palm without moving any other fingers, but I can't do this on the right. Is that normal?

Yep, totally normal - or (maybe) not! It depends on whether you have symmetrical abilities that got asymmetrical during your life because of differing uses of your hands, or if you have an a priori asymmetrical anatomy. Even that is normal to a certain degree, so no worries!

Did you, for example, play a string instrument as a kid? That tends to increase the ability to move fingers separately :)

I played the piano, and I am not unusually asymmetrical. Although I can twist my left elbow around a lot more than my right (even the degree to which I can move my right sometimes freaks people out) and raise the muscles on the left side of my face to sneer a lot more than the right. Hmm, maybe my left side is just more flexible after all.

My sister has double-jointed thumbs. She can bend them right back and touch her forearm. I can't, but once by accident my thumb got bent back like that, with minimal pressure. It was the most painful experience of my life. I actually lost all vision and I saw nothing but red for the instant that my thumb was bent the way my sister can bend her thumbs easily.

Genetics. Is there nothing it can't do?

\went straight to the freezer and packed my hand in ice
\\no permanent damage, unlike almost every other joint in my body
\\\getting old sucks. Be careful while you're young. Stuff doesn't heal

Hmm, maybe my left side is just more flexible after all.

Are you right-handed? I am, and all the additional musculature that I built up during sports on the right shoulder/arm (throwing) and left(!) leg (jumping) mean that that side is less flexible.

I am right handed, but then I am lazy and not very athletic, so that can't be it . . .

if you are not athletic, then everyday activities can do the same thing, especially if you don't do sports a lot and thus don't stretch often!
