Does anybody know what the criteria is for the AI to go nuclear? (besides as a retaliatory strike of course).

Some games the AI never uses them... Other times he treats them as just another tactical weapon and has no qualms about nuking 3-4 of my cities per turn (followed by paratroops of course)

It all depends, first they have to have the right technology and they have to be on a high difficulty level like king-deity, because cheiftan AI's never use them. India Mongols and Zulu's are Nuclear freaks. Watch out for them. All of the other civs i've found to be passive to the nuclear dawn.

SunTzu, my first Prince game the Sioux were nuking the heck out of everybody (including me

), followed by paratroopers. Of course, I was using them too, but I don't remember now who started. I do know the Sioux were nuking other civs before we were even at war.

Yeah i've been nuked on Prince level. I don't just mean nuked once. I was nuked into oblivion by the babylonians. City after city after city.

I was piling troops into a city as a staging base to attack a viking city (no where near babylonian territory).. They (the babylonians) nuked me - wiping out my city and the invasion force and the vikings captured the city! That was just the start of the nuclear holocaust.

By the time i got a peace treaty i had lost 12 million people (due to the nukes and the resulting global warming)

Usually I win on King... but I hadn't played in a while and was pretty embarrassed to have my *** handed to me in a bag on prince level... by the AI!

Been a long time since I had to worry about nukes. I usually don't let the enemy get that far...

I've always had the other civs under control (i.e., dead) while still poking around with cavalry. Never even faced an enemy Armor unit, let alone nukes. Of course the highest level I've played so far is King (current game - all over but the shouting). I guess one of these days I'm going to get my arse kicked and not know what hit me.

The Carhaginians and the Japanese are the worst NUKE RABID civs in my book.

I prevent the building of the Manhattan Project with spies, to curb this problem. Nukes suck, they ruin the game.

Now in one of my recent games I had fallen after in Sienc becouse i was fighting the the Japanise and put most of my mony and power on cruching them. But when they onlyhad two cities left (and I had like 40 or something) then they became allied with the Americans! And they didn't waithed long to send nuclear bombs into my 7 (!) biggest cities, incloding the capital. And after losing the capital my coutry was split in to two (and I lost the 6 other nuced cities). Now I just have 16 cities left. And the japanies also got nucs now and they and the americans don't look friendly.

WHAT?? You where split in half - as in now there are two new Civs

I didn't think that could happen to a human player!!!!

Why is it that everybody talks to much about nuclear wars?? I have only, ever, been in one nuclear war and that was in my second game of CIV1 I played a king game as my second and was stuck on an island and that ended with a total nuclear war. But never since that have I been in that kind of war - not even on Deity!!!
What is it with all you guys - why do you allow the AI to get nukes

I have NEVEr had a nuclear war with an AI civ. I usually kill them around the time when they have musketeers. Sometimes, at my best, i kill them even before they discover feudalism.

In my current and best game right now, i have a pet english city who only has around 10 techs, and I'm researching nuclear fission.

Is nuclear wars that common?

Well I try to win by making it to space. I'm more into the building aspect fo the game and I like creating a massive perfect (hopefully peacefull) empire.

I only go to war when I absolutely HAVE to smack one of AIs around. So invaraibly one of them ends up becoming a rival superpower. Usually Im more advanced by the end but they DO eventually get nukes before i launch my spaceship. And when i won't give them my technology (when they demand it) they end up nuking me.

Redwolf I hear you, but I usually beat down most of the other Civs, either by buying most their cities or just preventing them from making more cities. But I usually don't go to war, unless it's really necessary - which it usually isn't.

Well I've only used nukes a few times. Usually by the time I have nukes, I have SDI defence and can rarely use them. Generally the first one I get, takes the capital of the next largest/or heaven forbid the largest civ. Then I take it over and my nukefest usually ends.

Although in Civ 1, I nuke without regard for life. "There's 11 barb musketters. One for you. *boom*
