congratulations to all HoF-ers! I have a question about the triggering of victory conditions:

I see a lot of games in the hof with space race, domination, conquest as victory condition that ended in 2050 sharp, and I think:
"No, player XY, you did not win by by conquest, you earned a histographic. you probably conquered the world by 700AD with only one tundra city left that did not belong to your civ, and milked the next 354 turns, and in turn 539 you moved some of your left-over cavalry and just flicked that city off your map."

I find that irritating. why does a a player who has chosen the milk run trigger some of the other victory conditions? he/she will not get any early finish bonus score, he/she is undoubtedly capable to trigger any of the victory conditions (maybe except diplo :) ), so:

What's the point I miss?

While I barely qualify as a HoF-er, I can say that for my part it gives me a kick to set up all the victory conditions and then choose which one to trip in 2050. Thus far the only one I've not been able to pick is diplo. It's easy enough to time the vote but I'm not able to engineer it so that somebody would vote for me.
So it's kinda like you say...I just do it because I can

I don't win by histograph, 'cause I like the other victory conditions better. Just a personal preference, it's just that simple for me.... :)

I think the answer to your question lies in the History of the HOF:

Originally we ONLY had a List of the BEST 10 Scores for each Map Size, so if you wanted to get in the HOF on a Huge Map, you HAD to Milk it to 2050AD.....It didn't matter how you won the game....the Score was EVERYTHING!!
Now, the HOF has been changed to, in addition to the High Score LIST (Premier List, IMHO), there are Lists for Fast Finishes AND Histographic Victories (Most recent List).

So, in the "old" days, it didn't matter how you won, or when you won, ONLY the SCORE mattered! :)

I never raze cities :D I just take them and abandon them, or use it as a forward base.

If the city you abandon has any foreign citizens in it from an AI that still exist you also get a reputation hit!

thank you for all your answers, it became clear to me that it just doesn't matter, because hof entries are ranked by different factors: score, earliest win, score by 2050AD.
