Ok, so I assume it is censored because people use it to flame?

Perhaps it is a British thing, but I am at a loss what you should call someone who physically is less intelligent than average. "Mentally disabled" ? The word is re+ard... its not an offensive term.

Stupid, and dumb, do not have the "born with it" conertations.

Moderator Action: Intentionally bypassing the autocensor, and making that the subject of a thread? unacceptable.

/thread.

Anyways, re+ard is offensive, ******ed is not (or at least, not as offensive)

I'm not sure when or where the movement started, but as part of this whole "politically correct", way of things, somehow re<snip> became a naughty word. I've heard mentally challenged, mentally deficient, slow, so forth, but none of them have quite the same impact, bombast and flare as "special".

So go for special.

Its an actual medical term but its oftenly used as a derogratary, Ive been called it as that and its not very nice. I like to say "low IQ" or something.

well :):):):):):)/******ed used to be the PC term. Now it's mentally challenged which is used insultingly now too. do-gooders will always try and come up with something that isn't being used as an insult and inevitably jerks like me will start using it as an insult.

Well the minute something is used to categorize or refer to a segment of the population that is somehow at a disadvantage, it takes on a derogatory nature. There's really no way to prevent things like that from being offensive.

A large issue with the word "******ed" is that it is kind of a blanket term for anyone with a mental handicap. Considering there is a very wide variety of conditions that can lead to people being more or less mentally handicapped, its generally considered more appropriate to state their specific condition's medical name when referring to them whenever possible. Painting autism in the same group as say fetal alcohol syndrome for instance, is not just entirely scientifically wrong, but could lead to major misconceptions when you have to interact with someone with a disability as well.

In my school they have a new rule "Ban the R word" you can say it.. But they don't like it.. I say it quite a bit when my friends do something stupid or in general when somehing stupid happens..

I suppose it makes as much sense as taking offense to gay as a pejorative, since both terms describe a group of individuals, but are promptly butchered to meaning far more offensive things.

...makes me feel like I have a double standard...

And as said, the PC term is probably special, yes.

I assume "******ed" will eventually phase out as some sort of super offensive word. It's worth noting that the now completely unoffensive "moron", "idiot", "imbecile", and "dunce" were originally used to describe people with similar mental disorders.

Well I use ******ed alot like "oh your ******ed" "oh that's ******ed" I don't see my self stopping any time soon. :( I'd like to but I've used that word for years...

[pissed]

AS A VERY SPECIAL PERSON, IT ANGERS ME THAT PROFOUND LACK OF MENTAL ACUITY IS DEEMED TO BE SOMETHING SPECIAL. IT'S NOT SPECIAL, IT'S JUST STUPID.

See, what we need is a replacement term here in North America for those people that chose to ignore their brains. I support Jason Ellis' term: Ducktarded (except with an F in a mystery location!). It's still insulting to the moron you've leveled it at, yet shouldn't be offensive to anyone with a legitimate mental handicap.
