[NFP] What's Your Favorite Civ and Why

I am honestly amazed by the diversity of choices represented in this thread.

Faith is my favorite yield, and I try to avoid conflict as much as possible. Other people mostly ignore religion and focus on military. Some people are controlling dozens of cities, and I avoid having more than 4 to 6. Neither approach is necessarily right or wrong.

I appreciate these differences and how there are myriad ways to enjoy the game.

I think that this is testimony, despite all the B***ing going around on the game, that it is a very versatile game with lots of replayability options, and features that fits well with wide ranging tastes in gameplay !

America, because patriotism and I love Teddy.

Other than that, I really love playing the Maori, Indonesia, Mali, and Australia

Both Eleanors are sort of insane for cultural wins - I will surround your cities with books and eat them! The cities, not the books.

Ive just played my first game with kupe. Admittedly i played archi.

But it seemed insanely good, not only did i settle half the map before the other civs had a look in, but the exra food from boats, and the bonus for forests/rainforests was huge.

Not sure if i will play them again, but it was a fun game for sure...

Vanilla and One-off DLCs: Japan because they are so flexible and their city planning is very rewarding. And Hojo has the best leader model from Vanilla.

R&F: These are probably the least interesting for me. I particularly loathe all the +X bonuses for declaring wars with casus belli. But I do like the Cree's kit. Again, they're really flexible while mekewaps and their trade bonuses provide just enough of a twist on normal city development.

GS: Honestly all of them are good in their own way (except maybe Canada). It's tough to choose only one, but I'd have to go with Mali. It's just so satisfying to buy everything with gold while your cities focus all their production toward districts and wonders. And they can take advantage of certain City State bonuses (Fez, Nazca, Ngazargamu, all CS with international trade bonuses, etc.) to great effect.

NFP: Obviously too soon to tell, but unlike many here I actually think the Maya are quite fun and balanced. Gran Colombia are also fun... in the way that using the Cobra Car cheat in Age of Empires 2 against your little brother is fun.

Spain, England and Phoenicia because their focus on colonization (specially Phoenicia).

Poland because the way they use faith, their UU and their UA. Maybe Khmer if they were buffed somehow.

Georgia and Scotland! Georgia's music and aesthetic is very calming, and it's a lot of fun suzeraining all of the city-states. I have CIVITAS's City-States Expanded mod on almost every game, so it just feels rewarding to use. Scotland because I usually only have like 3-5 cities, so it feels nice having all that excess happiness for luxuries being put to great use.

Honorary mention for the Aztecs, both religious and domination. I don't usually do much conquest, but playing the Aztecs I really do feel like taking over other cities if they have luxuries that I don't, and it feels good to wield that bonus strength after you manage to do so.

I played england on a tsl, with just old world civs, i actually put the difficulty up since i had the advantage of knowing there was a continent to claim

It was such a fab game, colonising the whole of N&S america, invading the zulus, before settling for space.

Spain is still one of the few civs i havent played - will try them next!

Mali, Kongo, Maori, Maya -- all civs that really have a different game start compared with other civs. I'm also really fond of Gran Colombia, though I've only tried them briefly. I also really like Japan for the flexibility, and their music. :)

By far the best for me is korea. They got +4 campuses in every city at half costs. This already is unbeatable. Further down they get a hill starting bias, which is S tier utility. The special unit is good for defense and the governor bonus at least not useless. It gives me a decent start at deity to pull up defense, catch up in science, maybe take a city here and there and Look out for some oil and aluminium. I go via univervities straight into advanced flight and if I have some bombers at around T180 the AI is just shredding Material if followed up with some tanks. You can just go to space if this is more pleasant to you.

Also nice are Gorgo (hilly and culture from combat victories, sweden or China for culture victory).

Aztecs - It's really insane how a civ designed to be a base warmonger can be so good at *everything* they attempt without riding off the back of freebie borewhore bonuses (ahem, I am looking at you Korea and your free critical mass of science). I really feel like Firaxis hit the design for the Aztecs right where they should have and hopefully this will continue in future installments as well.

Inca's - same? Except replace "warmonger" with "builder". Ofc their Civ 6 design borrows heavily from Civ 5's, where they were one of the best, most fun Civs to play as, but I mean, if a system ain't broke, why try to fix it?

Australia - holy crap the amount of adjacency yield porn these blokes are responsible for is filthy and illegal (and lovely because it doesn't come for free, *under any given circumstance* AHEM KOREA) but until it's made illegal I'll gladly abuse their powers for my peacebuilding ends. :p

Egypt - after the buff from the Sphinx, a really solid civ? Good economy, good growth and production, reliable culture and faith. All you need is Liang, builders and disaster intensity 4 and you're set.

Yeah I like Faith and Gold the most. I guess I enjoy currencies over direct yields.

Hard to say what my favorite is... But here are some of my favorites that I continue to return to and why I love them: (in no-particular order other then my personal 'world map order'

Canada - a very simple Civilization that dosen't really have anything that stands out. However I absoltely love making the best empire possible with as much tundra and snow as possible. I am a builder/city-planner type of player, so to be able to take barren tundra and turn it green and lush and productive; that's why Canada is one of if not my favorite.

Maya - I love huge expansive empires where the sun may never set (I am British after all) but the Maya gives me reason to focus on a small handful of 8-9 cities to make then pretty and tall. It's a nice Civ for me to play as when I want to kick back and just see how other players and AI get on in the game. Also I enjoy figuring out how best to build a network of farms and get the most adjacenies for my Observatories and other districts in such a confined space.

Gran Colombia - The +1 movement is great and unique, meaning your settlers, workers and early game units get much more done much quickly and the free promotion action is great for all militery units, spies, apostles and rockbands to also get to work immediately instead of having to waste a turn. But the best bonus is the Hacienda; I love make huge spawling hacienda-plantation compounds. The extra production, and gold is great, but I love the housing most; I love getting huge ammounts of housing and populations in my cities.

Inca - I love the Terrace Farms and their adjacencies to and for mountains giving you lots of food, production and housing from otherwise unlikely places and make the landsape to weird and unsual compared to other Civs. Because I don't want to sacrifice any terrace-farmable tile I enjoy the extra city planning to see where the best places for districts should be when keeping the number of Terrace Farms as high as possible.

England (Victoria) - Unfortunatly there is nothing intresting about the city planning as England; but I still enjoy trying to get at least one city on each continent either peaceful colonialisim or through agressive-diplomacy; and trying to make a empire where the sun never sets with super long railway networks and a formidable navy backed by cities fully powered with their own industrial zones. (Although it's so very difficult to make best use of Victoria in the most recent update due to the end of the world coming too soon; both with and without Apocolypse Mode enabled.)

Netherlands - Polders. Need I say more? Ok, I'll say more; the city planning for your other districts along rivers is also really cool; and provided you have enough viable rivers, you can get a solid +2 or +3 adjacency for your science, culture and production districts without needing to worry about their regular adjacency bonuses.

Spain - I love city planning; and the best part of a civ for me is normally the tile improvements or the districts that give cool and intresting adjacencies. The Mission is no acception for me as I use to love to spam it around all campuses for so much faith and science (and they all look so pretty!) but with the most recent version of the mission they now need to be next to both campus and holysite for the best output; but with the bonus poduction and food from being other continents; even more reason to unlock my inner Victoria and colonise a whole other continent~

Hungary - I love the culture, leader and music of Hungary, so this Civ was always going to be a win for me; but I love cool city-planning aspect of the Pearl of the Danube ability which means you can shave off precious turns of production in your cities to build these nice little urban settlements along rivers which look so cool.

Mali - I love trade routes. Probably just behind food and housing for me, trade routes are my third most important thing I focus on in my games; so the fact Mali is based around trade routes and buying everything with gold or faith really fits perfectly in my play style as I do this with any Civ I play as; so Mali is just made for me.

Persia - Bonus to trade routes, a unique tile improvement that gets cool and intresting adajencies from districts and provides appeal meaning very cool and intresting city planning. There are some war bonuses too which I don't really care for but can help when they are required, but otherwise I very cool civ to play as for me.

Khmer - I LOVE the Khmer. I love the fact it's the only Civ (with acception to Rome) that REALLY gives you reason to build aquaducts. This Civ is also perfect for me, as the two things I focus on mostly with my games is Food and Housing; and the Khmer has that with bonuses to faith and amenities too meaning I can challenege myself to get the tallest cities possible. (no matter if there are pops that are unable to work anything such as those in my record 58 population city which still had overlap with other cities.)

Indonesia - I loved Indonesia in Civ5, so when I found out they were going to be in Civ6 I couldn't wait to see how they transitioned. They are basically unrecognisable but all for the better. The Kampung is hands down my most favorite tile improvement in all of Civ6 because it's so beautiful and you can spam it almost anywhere on costal tiles providing housing, food and production to otherwise un-improvable tiles. Yes, since Fisharies were introduced in the DLC just after Indonesia's inclusion, these are still better as they sacrifice 1 food for double the production and quaduple the housing and you don't need Liang. But I've always loved the appeal of stilt villages IRL, so they are always going to be my favorite tile improvements. (the rest of the Civ's bonuses are ok, but never really really notice them.)

Australia - Again, another intresting Civ to play as as you need to focus on city planning with appeal in mind adding an extra level to the puzzel which I enjoy. I also love the music but the best bit of all is the Outback-Stations. If I've not already made myself clear; I love Civs almost entirely based on their tile improvements or what adjacenies from districts, appeal or other mechanics do to the tiles around them, and the Outback station is another beautiful example of a tile improvement which can be spammed anywhere around pastures and in desert to make the land look so very unique and beautiful in a way that no other civ can.

I have phases

Canada
I like the peaceful playstyle

Phoenicia
I'm going through a naval power phase and Phoenicia is great for makinga naval superpower

Scotland

As I generally favour science even a small boost helps

If forced to pick just one, at this point, I would probably go with the new favorite:

Maya
They work the best with my favoured playstyle of having a limited number of very highly developed core cities. They are defensive, scientific, and play differently from other civs.

It feels wrong to just mention one, though, so here are some of my other favorites:

Inca
The Inca are fantastic, no other civs let me grow cities as tall as theirs, as quickly. The ability to work mountains is also really nice, you can actually get some pretty nice yields when you surround them with Terrace Farms, and even more so if you manage to get the Earth Mother pantheon, which will add 2 faith to all those tiles. Remember that the Inca also, in general, get to work more tiles due to how quickly their cities grow.

Mali
The Mali are a bunch of fun. Some may complain they start slow, but once you get your economy up and running, they will be really, really fast, as gold purchasing is instant.

Maori
Another civ which has a very different playstyle to others. I love that the Maori starts in the ocean, that they are disincentivised from chopping. The culture bomb from fishing boats is also pretty cool.

Norway
I like coastal civs, and was happy to see them get a boost. Norway has always been a fun civ to play, though, and I particularly like the using the Longship to do early exploration and raid coast lines.

Kongo
Good old Kongo used to be my very favorite civ, and I still enjoy them. What can I say, I like high populations, and those M'banzas are just so very spammable. I love that they give food and gold in addition to great housing. I also absolutely love the yields you can get from Archeological Museums as Kongo. A themed Kongolese Archeologial Museum will give you a whopping +12 production +12 food +24 gold, in addition to the usual culture, tourism and great people points.

used to be a rome.
then it was dido and gitarja.
now it is kristina. amazing games with sweden.

Civs that are flexible towards any victory types:
Japan, Brazil, Russia (Russia can do science pretty well too),
Opens up alot of options and different strategies for game play.

Civs with interesting mechanics:
Kupe, Mayans

Freshens up the game once in a while, though I can get really frustrated playing Mayan.
